Floatplane debate suggests deeper rifts remain in Adirondacks

Local government leaders, environmentalists, and state officials have pushed hard in recent years to improve relations in the Adirondack Park. Tomorrow, we'll hear about a group searching for "common ground" issues that Park activists agree on. But the heated debate over floatplane flights to Lows Lake has rekindled some old animosities. Last week, the Adirondack Park Agency rejected a plan to extend the tourist flights for another decade. As Brian Mann reports, the decision brought an angry response from local officials and some APA board members.  Go to full article

Surprising amount of love between the Adirondacks and Albany

When Republican Governor George Pataki left office, local leaders in the Adirondack Park worried that tensions with Albany and with environmental groups would escalate. The Glens Falls Post-Star published an editorial arguing that it might be time to do away with the Adirondack Park Agency. But as Brian Mann reports, all sides say ties between Park leaders and Albany have actually improved dramatically.  Go to full article

Adk snowmobile trail limit set at 848 miles

The Adirondack Park Agency has set a new limit on snowmobile trails that will affect "wild forest" land in the Park. The 848-mile ceiling, approved on Friday, drew fierce criticism from snowmobile riders. The reaction among pro-environment groups was more mixed, with some arguing that the limit leaves too much wiggle room. Brian Mann has details.  Go to full article

Key Senate committees approve Stiles for APA chair

Late last night two key state Senate committees voted to confirm Curt Stiles as the new chair of the Adirondack Park Agency. Stiles lives on Upper Saranac Lake and sits on the Adirondack Council board. The Governor also appointed environmental attorney and professor Dick Booth from Ithaca and he reappointed Lake Pleasant town supervisor Frank Mezzano. As Brian Mann reports, the appointments drew mixed reviews from green groups and from local government leaders.  Go to full article

Governor names Curt Stiles to chair APA

The state Senate is expected to consider confirmations of three new APA board members as early as Monday evening or early Tuesday. Governor Spitzer has named Upper Saranac Lake resident Curt Stiles to serve as chairman. Stiles has served as chairman of the Upper Saranac Lake Foundation and has taken a leading role on the issue of invasive species. Reached Monday via email, Stiles declined to comment, saying that an interview would be "premature."

The Senate is also expected to confirm Dick Booth, an environmental attorney and author from Ithaca. Booth was initially named to serve as chairman, but his appointment drew criticism because he lives outside the blue line. Booth has close ties to local government groups and to the environmental community.

Governor Spitzer has also reappointed Frank Mezzano, town supervisor from Lake Pleasant. Mezzano is a veteran member of the APA who returned to the board earlier this year after a brief hiatus.

The APA, a bipartisan commission charged with oversight of the Adirondack Park, is currently led by interim chairman Cecil Wray. It's unclear whether interim executive director Mark Sengenberger will be named to fill that post permanently. Stiles takes over at a time when the APA confronts major decisions, including the Park's snowmobile policy and the fate of the Adirondack Club and Resort project in Tupper Lake.  Go to full article
