In tough times, a food bank is ready to provide
Nov 26, 2008 — The economic recession is already hitting the North Country hard. St. Lawrence County has the highest unemployment rate outside of New York City. Layoffs and budget cuts across the region are forcing more people to food pantries and soup kitchens to feed their families. And it hasn't even gotten really cold yet. Food banks are reporting an increase in demand of anywhere from 10 to 50%. The Food Bank of Central New York sends millions of pounds of food to 47 pantries and soup kitchens in St. Lawrence, Lewis and Jefferson counties. It's been preparing for years for tough times like these. Now the system believes it's ready. David Sommerstein reports. Go to full article

Abu-Jaber's memoir focuses on food and its role in family culture - with a focus on Arab American acclimation. She'll visit the North Country in early April. "Soldier" portraits tour country
Sep 20, 2007 — In the spring of 2006, a series of billboards appeared along Rt. 81 near Syracuse, each featuring an enormous close-up of a young man's head on a plain dark surface. They were all soldiers, and the proximity to Fort Drum was no accident. Photographer Suzanne Opton told PRI's Studio 360 how she came to make the series of portraits she calls "Soldier."
