Commentary: Tax Cuts and Hope

In Washington, lawmakers continue to wrangle over President Bush's proposed $726 billion in tax cuts. The senate voted to support half that amount as the country is at war and faces a record-setting deficit. Many Democrats have said cuts will disproportionately benefit the rich. Senate Passes Bill Authorizing Tax on Internet Sales

It would be more expensive to order items over the internet, under a bill in the New York State Senate that would charges sales tax on e-commerce. State Senator Betty Little was among New York's Republicans to vote in favor of the bill yesterday. Governor's ?No Tax Increase? Budget Hikes Taxes By $1.4 Billion

Governor George Pataki says his budget will avoid "job-killing" tax increases. But critics of the spending plan say it's filled with hidden taxes and fee hikes that could total one and a half billion dollars.
