NY 20: Murphy will be sworn in this afternoon by Pelosi

Glens Falls businessman Scott Murphy will be sworn in this afternoon as New York's newest Congressman. The Democrat won a razor-thin victory in March, in a special election to replace Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed to the US Senate. New York's 20th congressional district stretches from Poughkeepsie in the Hudson Valley to Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks. Murphy is a newcomer to politics, but he managed to beat veteran Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, a Republican from Schenectady. Tedisco camp wants to use tax info to question ballots

Republican Jim Tedisco was back in court yesterday. He's hoping to prove that hundreds of ballots cast during last month's special House election should be disqualified. Tedisco, trailing, takes his 20th CD cause to court

Former Assembly minority leader Jim Tedisco goes back to court today. He's fighting to disqualify hundreds of absentee ballots cast in New York's 20th congressional district race.
Tedisco trails Glens Falls businessman Scott Murphy, a Democrat, by 273 votes. Murphy has maintained a lead for more than a week, as elections officials have checked and double-checked their tallies. Republican Jim Tedisco suffered two new setbacks yesterday in his bid to win the 20th district congressional seat. A tally of votes in Saratoga County failed to put him ahead of Democratic rival Scott Murphy. A judge also rejected the GOP?s effort to disqualify hundreds of ballots. Tedisco, Murphy race enters a process that could take months

State election officials say Democrat Scott Murphy leads the 20th district election by 47 votes. But as the ballot recount continues, Republicans in the district are trying to disqualify hundreds of ballots, including the vote cast by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Gillibrand held the House seat until January, when she was appointed to the US Senate. In a statement released last night, Gillibrand called the challenge "frivolous" and "dishonest." Republican Jim Tedisco has argued that too many second homeowners, many of them living in New York City, voted inappropriately in the election. In a statement issued last night, Tedisco's attorney, Jim Walsh, said that a judge should disqualify those votes. "We will continue to make the case that the ballots of hundreds of New York City voters should not be deciding this election," Walsh wrote. But Robert Brehm with the New York State Board of Elections, says the courts haven't restricted voting by snowbird residents and second homeowners in the past. Brehm spoke yesterday with Brian Mann about the ballot-counting process. He says the system works slowly, but will eventually produce a clear result.  Go to full article

Absentee tally begins in 20th district race

County officials will begin tallying absentee ballots today in the hotly contested race for the 20th congressional district seat. Republican Jim Tedisco currently leads the race by just 17 votes over Democrat Scott Murphy. Brian Mann has an update.  Go to full article

Special election too close to call

The 20th district special election is too close to call this morning, with Democrat Scott Murphy from Glens Falls leading by more than sixty votes. More than 150 thousand votes were cast and election officials say there are at least six thousand absentee ballots still to be tallied. Todd Moe and Brian Mann have more.  Go to full article

20th Congressional district race neck-and-neck

The battle to replace Kirsten Gillibrand in New York's 20th Congressional district is entering its final weekend and it's neck-and-neck. Gillibrand was appointed this winter to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate Seat. Republican Jim Tedisco and Democrat Scott Murphy met last night for their final debate in Latham.
