(11/05/08) Yesterday's stunning election of Democrat Barack Obama realigned the country's politics. But Tuesday's balloting brought equally profound changes to politics here in New York state. Republicans lost control of the state Senate for the first time in decades. The GOP also lost key House races across the state. And Republicans failed to reclaim the 20th congressional district seat which covers much of the North Country. As Brian Mann reports, it's unclear how the GOP will rebuild.
Kirsten Gillibrand and Sandy Treadwell
(10/30/08) In this chaotic election year, New York's 20th congressional district has emerged as the most expensive House race in the nation. Democratic incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand, who won in an upset two years ago, is spending a huge war-chest to hold a Republican-heavy region of the state. Challenger Sandy Treadwell has poured more than four million dollars of his own money into the contest. As Brian Mann reports, all that cash has finally sparked what looks like a real battle.
NOTE: After our story aired this morning, the Treadwell campaign contacted North Country Public Radio, responding to a comment made at the rally linking Barack Obama to Osama bin Laden. "We were not aware of anybody making such a comment," said campaign spokesman Peter Constantakes. "We do not agree with such comments and in fact we repudiate them."
Kirsten Gillibrand and Sandy Treadwell faced off for their final debate.
(10/29/08) Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand and challenger Sandy Treadwell met for their final debate last night. The hour-long conversation was hosted by the Glens Falls Post-Star and WNYT television. As Brian Mann reports, the pair differed sharply over policy. But both politicians stepped back from the campaign's growing negativity.

(10/24/08) Democratic Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand and Republican challenger Sandy Treadwell squared off last night. They're fighting to represent the 20th congressional district, which stretches from Saranac Lake to the Hudson Valley. In a debate sponsored by WMHT public television and the Albany Times-Union, Treadwell and Gillibrand wrangled over taxes, the war in Iraq and campaign ethics. As Brian Mann reports, the biggest drama came as the two candidates struggled to distance themselves from their more controversial supporters.

(09/30/08) The North Country's House delegation split on the Wall Street bailout on Monday, with two lawmakers from the region supporting the measure and one voting to reject it. Republican John McHugh and Democrat Mike Arcuri both expressed dismay that the $700-billion deal collapsed. McHugh told Fox News 28 that the failed bailout effort was "a real setback." He added, "this is not a time for panic" and described America's economy as "resilient." Meanwhile, Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, whose district stretches from Saranac Lake to the Hudson Valley, voted No on the bipartisan bill. Gillibrand spoke last night with Brian Mann.
(09/17/08) Less than two months before the November election, the Gillibrand and Treadwell campaigns are feuding over the timing and format of this fall's debates. New York's 20th congressional district is one of the most closely watched House races in the country. Brian Mann has an update.
(09/05/08) Republican candidate Sandy Treadwell, from Essex County, is running for the 20th congressional district. He hopes to unseat Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand. Treadwell traveled to the Twin Cities for the Republican National Convention. He checked in with Brian Mann yesterday, at a time when the convention floor was still buzzing about Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. more
(09/02/08) Republicans are struggling across the Northeast. The GOP suffered big losses in the region two years ago and polls suggest that 2008 could be even worse. One bright spot for the GOP is its rural base. Those same surveys show that small town voters still favor Republicans by wide margins. As Brian Mann reports, the rural advantage could make all the difference in key races, from New Hampshire to New York state.
(08/29/08) The candidates in the 20th congressional district say they'll hold at least one debate this fall. But Republican Sandy Treadwell says he hopes to face Democratic congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand at least 10 times before the November election. Treadwell says a debate should be held in each of district's 10 counties, which stretch from the Hudson River valley north to the outskirts of Saranac Lake. He issued his challenge on the day Gillibrand was speaking at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Brian Mann has more. more
