Harleys to Hondas: bikers take over Lake George

Lake George is one of those North Country towns that's calm and quiet in the winter, but explodes with tourism in the summer. Right at the top of tourism season is a motorcycle rally called Americade.

Every year, thousands of bikers from all over the northeast gather in tiny Lake George. Riders tour the Adirondacks, peruse new gear, watch stunt shows, and meet one another. Zach Hirsch spent a day at the bike festival earlier this week, and produced this audio postcard.  Go to full article

Is budget boost enough to save North Country schools?

Schools are digesting news of a $1.1 billion increase in state aid in the budget deal announced over the weekend.

State Senator Patty Ritchie says that's the largest increase in five years, which includes $20 million extra for schools within her 48th Senate district in Jefferson, Oswego, and part of St. Lawrence Counties.  Go to full article

Upstate NY man accused of killing estranged wife

LAKE LUZERNE, N.Y. (AP) An upstate New York man has been accused of killing his estranged wife with a knife.

The Warren County sheriff's office says 46-year-old Clifford Burns of Niskayuna was arrested after a brief car chase soon after 42-year-old Patricia Burns was attacked in her Lake Luzerne home at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.  Go to full article

Warren County seeks lost property map worth $1M

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (AP) Officials in Warren County are trying to find a lost property map that could save taxpayers nearly $1 million.

The Glens Falls Post-Star reports that the map, missing since at least 2005, is believed to show aviation easements on property around the county airport dating to the early 1940s.  Go to full article

Warren county barn gets a facelift

One of Warren county's oldest barns will be open to the public this weekend after years of restoration work. The century-old barn near Thurman was state-of-the-art for livestock and hay storage when it was built in 1903. But, Nettle Meadow farm's historic barn nearly crumbled during Hurricane Irene two years ago. Prison guard union smarting over closure announcement

Correction officers say they are still in "shock," that late on a July Friday, with very little advance warning, Governor Cuomo's prison agency announced the closure of four prisons within the next year. And they are asking the legislature to rescind the closures.  Go to full article

Preview: A night of patriotic tunes in Glens Falls

The Glens Falls Symphony presents its annual Summer Pops Concert outdoors tonight in Crandall Park. In addition to its popular tunes and patriotic favorites, tonight's concert will also include a tribute to Warren County's bicentennial. EMS volunteer numbers plummet in Warren, Washington Cos

The number of volunteers in the region's emergency squads continues to plummet. As volunteers leave, paid staff often has to fill the gap. That's an added financial burden.

Officials in Warren and Washington counties said last week that, unless something is done to boost the number of volunteers, many of the squads in small, rural communities won't survive.  Go to full article

ADK tourist train wins Econ Development Council support

The North Country's Regional Economic Development Council is throwing its weight behind the tourist train that runs through the heart of the Adirondacks.
In its latest planning document, submitted to Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday, the council says one of its key strategies is to "preserve and rehabilitate all surviving rail infrastructure" in the Park. According to the group, that includes "the Adirondack Railroad from Remsen to Lake Placid."  Go to full article
