(05/12/11) This weekend, the village of Canton will be a haven for flatwater paddlers with the 50th anniversary of the Rushton canoe races.
There are also plans in the works to make better use of the Grasse River's whitewater. Planners are exploring construction of a "whitewater play park" at four sites on the Grasse in Canton. There's a public meeting on the subject tonight at 5:30 at the Grasse River Heritage building in the village.
David Sommerstein caught up with two of the organizers, Baylor Johnson and Dan McConnell.

(06/26/07) For ten years, St. Lawrence University has been sending students north into the James Bay region of Quebec and Ontario. The James Bay Canoe Expedition is led by Phil Royce. He's a veteran whitewater guide and heads the school's outdoor program. This year, Royce led a team of eight paddlers down the Wakwayowkastic River. His audio diary from the trip was produced by Brian Mann. We also heard from students Jon Angus and Barrett Miles, who graduated from SLU this year. In ten years of the James Bay Canoe Expedition, there has never been a serious injury.

(05/06/02) Canoe season is in full flood - both for recreational boaters and more focused paddlers. Races opened the season in earnest on rivers across the North Country. In Canton, C-1 Pro World Championships headlined the 41st annual Rushton races. The Teva Black River Rodeo brought kayaking pros to the Black River in Watertown. And wintry weather ended just in time for the hundreds of boaters gathered from around the country for the 45th annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby in North Creek. Brian Mann dropped by for the race and sends this audio postcard.
