Wisconsin Oneidas Eye Antwerp Land

The plot continues to thicken in Governor Pataki's efforts to resolve land claims in New York with native tribes. The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin may acquire 1000 acres of state forest land in Jefferson County as a part of a settlement. Forests in the Age of Global Warming

Scientists are growing trees in a Northern Wisconsin forest, in a bath of greenhouse gasses. There's a theory that forests can help limit the predicted increase in world temperatures from global warming, and its dire consequences. But early results suggest that Great Lakes forests might struggle to survive the century; doing little to help the survival of the planet. Preview: Guys on Ice

The Adirondack Theatre Festival in Glens Falls kicks off its 8th season with a musical comedy about life, love and ice-fishing. Set in an ice shanty on a frozen northern Wisconsin lake, Guys On Ice tells the story of long-time pals Lloyd and Marvin who keep warm with a mutual appreciation for good bait, conversation about life and tales of the one that got away. Dairy Farmers Revive Old Customs

If you drive out into the countryside these days, expecting pastoral scenes of placid cows grazing leisurely on grassy hillsides, you'll be at least 50 years too late. Traditional pastoral herding practices, based on the summertime abundance of self-renewing grasses, has mostly disappeared. It's been replaced by year-round production based on dried feeds grown from intensively worked soils. But some farms are resisting the trend. The Pleasant Ridge Farm in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, like a number of other farms around the Great Lakes region, is an example of a successful and quite modern, revival of pasture-based agriculture. Wisconsin Oneidas Sue New York Property Owners

Days after the Oneida Nation and New York State announced an agreement to resolve the tribe's decades old land claim, the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin is suing 20 private property owners in central New York to stop the deal. David Sommerstein has more.  Go to full article

Shrinking Habitat: Karner Blue's Last Stand

Once, a postage-stamp-sized butterfly known as the Karner Blue was found all across the Great Lakes states, from Minnesota to New York. Today its population has declined by 99 percent. Conference on Great Lakes Invasive Species Held

The unchecked spread of invasive plants is causing alarm throughout the Great Lakes region. Invasives are plants that are often imported for ornamental use, and have now gone wild and spread to places they're not wanted. The concern over these plants is so great that hundreds of land managers, educators, botanists and others attended a recent conference in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to learn more about the problem.
