(06/18/04) There's more than a year left before a controversial federal milk program expires. But Northeast lawmakers are already pressing their Midwestern counterparts to support a new version. Representatives like Congressman John McHugh and US Senator Charles Schumer hope to replace the current Milk Income Loss Contract or MILC program, which expires next year, with the National Dairy Equity Act. In an interview yesterday, Schumer said the legislation probably won't pass in the next few months, but there is gaining support for it across the nation.

Project Targets Underage Drinkers' Suppliers

(05/14/04) A local campaign against underage drinking begins today in St. Lawrence County. "Project Sticker Shock" targets adults who may be tempted to buy alcohol for minors. About 140 students will begin the sticker campaign today at grocery and convenience stores and alcohol retailers across the county. Ruth Fishbeck runs the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative. The idea, she says, is to place bright green warning stickers on packs of beer and wine coolers that list the penalties for providing underage drinkers with alcohol.

(05/13/04) Plattsburgh may soon be home to a new Federal Court. Increased border patrol, as part of the nation's Homeland Security efforts, has lead to a greater caseload in the Northern District. And, as Jody Tosti reports, making space for a federal court in Clinton County will help minimize an already burdened federal courthouse in Albany.

Jody Tosti comes to NCPR with nearly seven years in broadcast journalism. She mostly recently worked in commercial radio at Straus Communications in Poughkeepsie, New York. There, she was news director for nine stations with formats ranging from talk radio to country music. Coverage area spanned five counties and included her hometown of New Paltz, New York, in Ulster County.
