The best eclectic mix of international music each week. Here's your place to listen to the latest edition of Music for a Monday, hosted by Jackie Sauter, anytime you want. The 7/26/10 edition is the lead segment of this stream. (This archive will only be available until next week's show is posted.)
![]() Can't sing, don't play an instrument, but I sure do love music, all kinds, and I love sharing it with listeners on Mondays. Besides enriching our own lives, music really is a universal language and has so many possibilities for helping us understand each other better and come to a fuller appreciation of other cultures and world views. The emphasis on the show is on world music, but we also take many eclectic side trips to swing, jazz, blues, folk, country, pop and beyond, with special attention paid to new releases that I think you would enjoy. Public radio listeners are a sophisticated and discriminating bunch, so keeping up with you is always a challenge. Your comments and questions are always welcome!E-mail Jackie!! And in case you need a list, here's onemy recommendations, some old, some new. I'll update it from time to time. If you like the show, you will like these recommendations!

July 28, 2010 | NPR · In this week's installment of Alt.Latino, hear a collection of outstanding cover songs, from the bizarre to the sublime. A Mexican glam-rock band wipes the tears off a sad pop tune and gives it an edge, while a Colombian singer turns a macho ballad into a feminist song -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
July 26, 2010 | NPR · Algerian singer Khaled is known internationally for singing rai -- a kind of North African music with roots in traditional folklore. Taken literally, rai translates to "opinion," and Khaled has taken that idea to heart. Although his music won him enemies among Algeria's Islamic fundamentalists in the 1980s, he continues to use his voice to spread a message of peace, love and personal freedom.
July 26, 2010 | NPR · Celebrated as a groundbreaking MC in Latin America, Tijoux blends her French-Chilean background with myriad other influences in "1977," a crazy quilt of rap, rhythm, strings and sentiment.
July 26, 2010 | NPR · Individually, Fleck, Meyer and Hussain are world-class masters of the banjo, the bass fiddle and the tabla, respectively. Playing together in the offices of NPR Music, the three demonstrate the way musical mastery can be transformed into an exercise in wordless communication.
