Senecas reassert sovereignty; Cuomo eyes gambling

(Aug 11, 2011) Seneca Nation president Robert Odawi Porter is using an historic piece of cloth to deliver a message to New York State about native sovereignty. He said payment of the cloth and a small sum according to an 18th century treaty symbolizes native nations' freedom from state taxation and right to land. The history lesson came on the same day that Governor Andrew Cuomo announced he is considering legalizing gambling in New York. That would have a profound effect on native nations and tribes around the state who rely on their casinos for revenue. Martha Foley and Dave Bullard report.
(Jul 21, 2011) Governor Cuomo notched a series of political wins in his first six months in office: an on-time budget, a property tax cap, union concessions, and legalization of same sex marriage. This week, he outlined his next big push, outlining an aggressive plan to reinvent state government. WRVO’s Dave Bullard reports that the effort boils down to one word: jobs.
Farmers say milk pricing is "broken"

(May 24, 2011) Congress is about to begin work on a new bill for America's farms. Dairy farmers are particularly concerned about what will go into the next Farm Bill. North Country farms hemorrhaged money in 2009 when the price of milk tumbled well below the cost of production. Those that didn't sell their herds are still trying to recover. Some of the region's dairy farmers brought their concerns to a listening session held by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in Herkimer last month. Dave Bullard reports. [full story]

(Apr 6, 2011) Though his austerity budget has taken up the lion's share of the Cuomo Administration's time and energy in its first three months, leadership posts are slowly filling. Yesterday, as expected, the state Senate Agriculture Committee, under new Sen. Pattie Ritchie of St. Lawrence County, confirmed her Senate predecessor, Darrel Aubertine of Jefferson County, as farm commissioner. Dave Bullard reports.
Villages consider - and reconsider - consolidation

(Feb 28, 2011) This spring, residents of Potsdam will get their first look at a study of whether the village of Potsdam should disappear as a government body.Governor Cuomo has said he wants to provide financial help for villages that consolidate into their surrounding towns.Several other villages are also looking at the issue, including Mannsville in southern Jefferson County. In 2009, a new law made it easier to dissolve local governments. But so far, every village that has voted on the issue has chosen not to dissolve. One exception is the village of Altmar in Oswego County. Reporter Dave Bullard explains the issue is more complex than it might seem.
(Jan 21, 2011) Governor Andrew Cuomo says he expects a bloody fight over his upcoming budget, but not a state government shutdown.
