Membership FAQs

  1. Why should I become a "member" of a radio station?
  1. The programming you find on NCPR—especially the news—is extremely expensive. We purchase network programming from National Public Radio and Public Radio International and produce local programs as well. Then we turn to the people who listen to help pay the bills. It's like paying for a subscription to a newspaper, magazine or cable system, only we don't have a required subscription rate and we work on the honor system. If you use our service, we request that you do whatever you can to help keep the station viable for the future.

  1. How do I decide how much to contribute?
  1. The amount you contribute is entirely up to you. We ask you to think about how many hours you listen each day or week, how much you pay for other news and entertainment sources, and how much you can afford. We say "give until it feels good."

  1. Is my gift tax-deductible?
  1. Your gift to NCPR is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Current IRS regulations allow you to deduct the amount of your contributions during the year MINUS the estimated fair market value of any thank you gifts you received in return.

  1. How do I get one of those Thank You Gifts?
  1. You'll find a selection of current gifts at our on-line pledge form. During on-air fundraisers, other gifts may be offered. You should receive your gift three to four weeks after your pledge has been paid. Members paying by monthly installments receive their gifts after the station's costs are covered. We hope, however, that supporting public radio is the true motivation for your pledge.

  1. Does NCPR exchange its members' names?
  1. Lists of donors to NCPR are confidential. Your decision to support public radio is a fundamentally private decision; we are committed to keeping that decision private.

  1. How long will my membership last?
  1. Your membership is good for twelve months. We will notify you by mail when it's your time to renew. You are certainly welcome to make additional gifts throughout the year, but your membership renewal date will remain consistent.

  1. What if I move?
  1. NCPR's network of transmitters and translators cover a huge geography. You may still be within the listening area! Please let us know if you move. We will be sure to change our records. We are charged for each piece of bulk mail that is forwarded to you or returned to us. Help us save money by notifying us of your new address as soon as possible.

  1. Why did I get two of these?
  1. If you receive two copies of any of our mailings, you may have duplicate membership records. Please e-mail June Peoples or call 315-229-5356 or toll free 877-388-NCPR during regular business hours, and we'll fix the problem.

  1. How much mail am I going to get if I become a member?
  1. None, if you don't want any. We will mark your membership record as you wish. But we're pretty conservative users of paper and postage. You can expect to receive the quarterly Newsletter, a holiday programs flyer, and an annual renewal letter. We do send monthly invoices for unpaid pledges and renewal reminders. It is very rare for us to ask for a contribution in addition to your annual subscription.
