Amish farmers partner with Agri-Mark

(Apr 18, 2013) Most of the North Country is losing population, and losing farms. But there's one group that keeps growing: Old Order Amish. They're drawn to the St. Lawrence Valley by the area's cheap, available farmland. They Amish live an agrarian lifestyle that's more 19th century than 21st century. But in order to support their communities and their culture, the Amish have had to find a place in the local economy, including the dairy industry and an unlikely partnership with Agri-Mark.
Old Christmas an old tradition for many Amish in the North Country

(Jan 2, 2013) For most of us, Jan. 1 marks the end of the holiday season, whether that's a sad goodbye or a relief. But for some Christians, including many of the Amish people in the North Country, Jan. 6 is another day of celebration: Epiphany, or "Old Christmas." Karen Johnson-Weiner is a professor of linguistic Anthropology at SUNY Potsdam. She's been working with the North County's Amish for years.
Old ways add up nicely for one subsistence family

(Mar 5, 2012) It’s a scene that was common-place in the early 20th century, horses out on a frozen lake cutting through the ice with bladed plows. Ice harvesting may not be part of your family’s plans this year, but for one rural St. Lawrence County family it’s the only way to keep food cool during the summer. Trevor Alford visited the Douglass family farm outside Canton and has our story.
PBS Amish documentary looks at diversity, highlights North Country communities

(Feb 27, 2012) A new film called “The Amish” premieres tomorrow night on the PBS program American Experience. There’s an advance showing tonight at SUNY Potsdam. For many people watching the program, the Amish will seem very mysterious and far-removed from their everyday lives. But in big parts of the North Country, the Amish are part of everyday life, we shop alongside them, do business with them, and share the roads with their horse-drawn buggies.
Amish in Northern New York changing the face of farming

(Jul 27, 2011) There are now about 13,000 Amish in New York—many in the North Country. A recent study from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania showed that’s about three times the number of Amish the state had just two years ago—and the population’s growing faster than in any other state.
