A look back at the Olympics

(Mar 9, 2010) Lake Placid-based photographer Nancie Battaglia was NCPR’s eyes, and ears, during the Vancouver Olympic games. Battaglia came to Lake Placid to document the 1980 Winter Olympics, and she’s is now an experienced Olympic “regular.” Vancouver was her eighth games, seventh winter games. She shoots for a number of publications, including Sport Illustrated. This year she not only sent us great shots of local athletes at the games, she found their families and fans, too, and checked in on-air during breaks in the action. Martha Foley called her for a final conversation this week. She’s been back for about a week, catching up, catching her breath. She left early on the final Sunday – missing the climactic US Canada hockey game, but also ahead of the crowds that jammed the region’s airports that night and the next day.
More struggles for North Country Olympians

(Feb 19, 2010) The Winter Olympics in Vancouver are just about halfway done. There are just four medal events on the schedule today, and they're all being held at Whistler. First up is the men's Super G. Bode Miller will be looking for his second medal of these games. In cross-country skiing, the women compete in the 15 kilometer pursuit. Finally, at the Whistler Sliding Center, both the women and the men will complete the skeleton. Weather forecasts look good, if a tad warm. After a cold night, skies should be clear with highs in the low 40s.Overall, the US team is leading the medal count. Last night, figure skater Evan Lysacek added to the gold medal count, the first American to win gold since Brian Boitano in 1988. We've been following the dozen-plus North Country athletes in Vancouver, and they've had their disappointments this week. Martha Foley has more.
The Olympics Done, Memories of Food and Games

(Feb 28, 2006) The Winter Olympics are all done in Turin, Italy. It was a rocky few weeks for some of America's athletes. Lake Placid's sled teams fell far short of the medal count that they racked up four years ago in Salt Lake City. The U.S. Hockey team melted down. Brian Mann has been checking in with Lake Placid photographer Nancie Battaglia, who was our correspondent at the games. She's back home now and told Brian that the Winter Olympics had plenty of highs as well as lows.

(Feb 14, 2006) North Country luge racers Samantha Retrosi and Erin Hamlin competed Monday afternoon at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Samantha Retrosi, from Saranac Lake, crashed on her second run and apparently suffered a mild concussion. Erin Hamlin finished in 17th place. Brian Mann spoke a few minutes ago with Nancie Battaglia from Lake Placid, our correspondent in Turin. She was trackside when Samantha lost control of her sled.

(Feb 13, 2006) Three local athletes have competed so far in Italy. In the men's 20 km biathlon race on Saturday, Lowell Bailey from Lake Placid finished in 27th place. The event mixes cross country skiing and target shooting. Tim Burke from Lake Placid finished 58th. Both men will compete again later in the week. Bill DeMong from Vermontville finished 15th in his first Nordic combined event on Saturday. The sport is a mix of ski jumping and cross-country skiing. He, too, has more races to come later in the week. Brian Mann checked in with Nancie Battaglia, a free lance photographer from Lake Placid who's covering the Turin Winter Games. Nancie was at the sled track in midst of yesterday's races.
