A casino in Brasher? Why not?!

(May 22, 2012) A troubled parcel of more than 900 acres of land in Brasher and Norfolk may one day be a casino. At least, that’s what Brasher Town Supervisor James Dawson is proposing. Dawson told town board members last week a casino would be a great way to attract visitors to the region…and to pump up St. Lawrence County’s flagging economy. Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed a constitutional amendment to create seven commercial casinos across the state. Brasher is only a few miles from the Akwesasne Mohawk casino near Massena, and Dawson says two casinos in the area could make it a destination for Canadian tourists.
Brasher to loan to local businesses

(May 25, 2011) The town of Brasher has taken the first step toward creating a local development corporation to make loans to local businesses. Brasher’s right next door to the Akwesasne Mohawk casino, and under the gambling compact that made way for that casino, the town gets a share of the profits—so do Massena, Fort Covington, and Bombay. That Mohawks give the money to the state, and the state passes it back to the towns, earmarked for tourism, infrastructure, gambling addiction education—and local economic development. Nora Flaherty reports. [full story]

Cranberries, a hidden bumper crop in Brasher Falls

(Nov 4, 2008) The next time you bite into a cranberry muffin, drink some cranberry juice, or set out cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving, you may actually be supporting North Country agriculture. The signature crop of New England, cranberries, actually thrive in the flat lands of the St. Lawrence River valley, right near the Akwesasne Mohawk reservation. David Sommerstein visited the North Country’s only commercial cranberry bogs.
Feedlot, ethanol plant plan draws critics

(Nov 16, 2007) A New York City-based firm is pushing ahead on a project that would combine a massive feedlot with alternative energy in St. Lawrence County. Bion Environmental Technologies touts an environmentally friendly way to raise 84,000 beef cattle and produce ethanol in the process. The project would be the first of its kind in the country. Many community leaders see the $200 million project as an economic boon and an environmental model. But a growing number of critics say the “green” promises are too good to believe.
(Jul 20, 2006) The developers who want to build a NASCAR-style raceway in northern St. Lawrence County are talking with new investors. Last week, a group from the Middle East failed to meet a deadline to bankroll the project. David Sommerstein reports.
Race Track Brings Mixed Reaction

(Apr 11, 2006) A group of investors based in Utica wants to build a race track and entertainment complex in Northern St. Lawrence County, just south of the Mohawk reservation. They say construction alone would create more than 4000 jobs. And once it’s up and running, the track could generate millions of dollars in annual revenue for the county. Reaction in the community is mixed. Douglas Hopper went to the site and nearby towns to find out what people had to say.
(Mar 7, 2006) Investors unveiled plans for a $108 million professional racetrack in St. Lawrence County yesterday. They said the project was in its preliminary stages. As David Sommerstein reports, it could be years before a racecar roars across the finish line.
Brasher Exits Mohawk Land Claim Deal

(Jan 31, 2006) The deal to settle the 23-year-old Mohawk land claim has hit another stumbling block. Last week, the town of Brasher voted to withdraw from the settlement. That’s a problem because almost a quarter of land offered the Mohawks is in Brasher. The St. Lawrence and Franklin County legislatures plan to meet in joint session to discuss the land claim next week. David Sommerstein reports.
