Champlain's St. Mary's Academy closes its doors

(Aug 15, 2012) Another Catholic school is closing in the North Country. St Mary's Academy, a pre-kindergarden to 6th grade elementary school within the Clinton County town of Champlain, won't reopen in the fall. Catholic officials blame declining enrollment, a budget deficit, and worries about long-term debt. But for parents of the 46 kids, from New York, Quebec and Vermont, who went to St. Mary's, the decision has meant painful changes.
Cuomo in step with Dems on social issues

(Jan 14, 2011) Much of the focus in the first two weeks of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s term has been on the state’s financial crisis, and the new governor’s fiscally conservative prescriptions: a public employee wage freeze, spending cuts, a property tax cap. Cuomo, a Democrat, is more in step with his party when it comes to social issues. Karen DeWitt explains.
The Last Nun in Tupper Lake

(Jul 5, 2005) When a Catholic woman becomes a nun, she joins a community – a sisterhood. But what happens when the sisters have all gone away? There’s a nationwide trend: the number of priests and nuns is declining, and it’s hit rural areas particularly hard. In Tupper Lake, the Daughters of the Holy Spirit used to run the Catholic school. The school closed three years ago and the convent only has one sister left. Reporter Gregory Warner spent an afternoon with that sister — Sister Gertrude Clemers, the “last nun” of Tupper Lake. He sent us this postcard.
In A Time Of War, Voices For Peace

(Jan 7, 2003) The U.S. Military continues to prepare for war in Iraq, sending thousands of troops to bases in the Persian Gulf. The Bush Administration says war isn’t certain, but many observers say the fighting could begin as early as next month. Peace activists in the north country say they, too, are getting ready. A growing number of groups across the region have staged protests and vigils, hoping to win more support. As Brian Mann reports, peace activists in this rural area face harsh weather, isolation—and some questions that don’t have easy answers.
(Mar 27, 2002) The New York State Senate has passed a bill that would require priests and other clergy to report evidence of child sexual abuse. It was passed in response to the growing sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Karen Dewitt reports.
