(Mar 12, 2013) The union representing border patrol agents says it's being unfairly targeted for spending cuts under the sequester, and that there will be less of a law enforcement presence along the North Country's border with Canada.
(May 23, 2011) Cuts in federal and state aid and a potential 2% property tax cap mean North Country County public health departments are facing some tough choices. What those choices are likely to be is just now starting to come out as the departments are beginning to formulate their budgets for next year.
Tax the rich or cuts to schools?

(Mar 11, 2011) The state budget is due in just three weeks. Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed deep cuts to New York public schools and districts here in the North Country are contemplating widespread teacher lay-offs. But a coalition of activists and educators say the state's highest income earners should pay more taxes to fund education programs and other state spending. Karen Dewitt reports from Albany.
(Feb 18, 2011) A major New York State union is going on the air with televisions ads to try to convince state lawmakers to continue a tax on the wealthy instead of adopting Governor Cuomo’s billion and half dollars in school aid cuts.
North Country schools say cash reserves can't cover Cuomo cuts

(Feb 14, 2011) A report released last week by the state Education Department estimates that 74 percent of school districts outside of New York City have a big enough fund balance to pay for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed state aid cuts. The numbers show that districts have about $1.16 billion in their reserve accounts, along with a little more than $355 million in federal stimulus funds leftover from last year. But opponents of Cuomo’s budget cuts say that’s just not true. They claim the aid cuts will force thousands of teacher layoffs and result in increased taxes, especially in poor North Country districts. Chris Morris has our story.
Disabilities advocates fear funding cuts

(Nov 10, 2009) Governor Paterson’s deficit reduction plan is facing opposition from many groups who rely on government funding. People with disabilities have been keeping a vigil in Albany since last week to protest proposed cuts. St. Lawrence County NYSARC didn’t send anyone to Albany to join in because they couldn’t afford it, says Daphne Pickert, the group’s executive director. NYSARC provides services to 650 people with disabilities and employs almost 600 people in St. Lawrence County alone. Pickert told David Sommerstein the 10% proposed cuts would leave her with no choice but to cut programs and jobs.
Corning lays off 34; union questions timing

(Dec 10, 2008) Labor is criticizing the timing of layoffs at the Corning plant in Canton. The high-tech glassmaker is cutting 34 jobs at the same time the plant will shut down for two weeks over the holidays to save money. The union says workers will essentially lose their jobs three days before Christmas. David Sommerstein reports.
School Programs Face Cuts ? Again

(Mar 10, 2003) Throughout the North Country, school administrators are grappling with devastating preliminary budgets for next year. They’re dealing with falling state aid and rising costs. They’re considering cutting programs, laying off teachers, closing school buildings, and still may propose tax levy increases in the 20% range. Last spring David Sommerstein profiled two programs in Malone that faced cuts. This year is no different. Here’s that story.
