Patriot Hills vets retreat looking for a home

(Dec 1, 2010) Organizers of the Patriot Hills at Saranac Lake project are looking at a resort on Lower Saranac Lake as a possible home for their proposed retreat and reintegration center for veterans, soldiers and their families. Patriot Hills officials have met with the owners of the Ampersand Bay Resort and Boat Club and an adjacent, undeveloped property. But a deal seems unlikely soon, as the nascent organization is still working to raise funds — and its profile. Chris Knight reports.
Hoffman's withdrawal expected to boost GOP chances

(Oct 6, 2010) In a press release announcing his withdrawal from the 23rd CD race yesterday, Doug Hoffman wrote, “I entered the 23rd Congressional District race for the good of our nation and to represent the common sense beliefs and values of the voters of upstate New York. Our nation is at a crossroads and it is imperative that on Election Day we wrest control of Congress from Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat majority." He strongly urged his supporters to "not vote for me and certainly not vote for the Democrat or Working Families Party candidate."Hoffman offers a clear endorsement of Matt Doheny, the Republican in the contest. “Matt Doheny and I may have differed on some issues during the course of our primary race. Now, we must put those differences aside and do what is best for our nation. So today, I am asking all my supporters to cast their vote for Matt Doheny on Election Day, November 2nd."Jude Seymour has followed this race, and last year’s special election, as political reporter for the Watertown Daily Times. He told David Sommerstein Hoffman’s endorsement of Doheny is bound to be a plus for the Republican.
Plattsburgh Democrat Bill Owens scores historic win in 23rd

(Nov 4, 2009) For the first time since before the civil war, much of the North Country woke up this morning with a Democratic Congressman. Bill Owens defeated Conservative Doug Hoffman, 49 to 46 percent, in the 23rd district special election, with 95% of precincts reporting. Republican Dede Scozzafava, who abruptly dropped out over the weekend, still captured 6% of the vote. Hoffman conceded last night. The historic race featured millions of dollars in attack ads, appearances by the nation’s biggest political figures, and a fight for the identity of the Republican party. David Sommerstein was at Owens headquarters in Plattsburgh and has this story.
