Raquette River at center of Potsdam downtown revitalization plan

(Apr 6, 2012) Earlier this week the village of Potsdam unveiled its long-awaited plan to revitalize its waterfront and downtown areas. It includes a facelift for the village’s Ives Park and improvements in recreational access to the Raquette river; and construction of an open-air pavilion where an expanded farmers market would take place. It calls for a big new hotel in the village; streetscape improvements in the downtown and waterfront areas; a riverfront walkway; and public restrooms. And there would also be a big marketing effort and a new Potsdam website.
Watertown officials fret over fate of downtown development project

(Jan 23, 2012) Watertown has been excited about the possibility of a new future for the city's landmark Woolworth building for several years. The historic downtown building is on the site of the dry goods store where F.W. Woolworth began his retail career. In 1921, after launching his five-and-dime empire, Woolworth demolished the old store and built his imposing new headquarters. But as the five and dime empire went, so went the building. It's been vacant for years.A new owner purchased the building several years ago, now city officials worry the redevelopment plans may be in jeopardy. Joanna Richards has the story.
(Nov 1, 2011) They say it takes a village to raise a child. But these days, it also takes a lot of extra effort to keep downtown business districts vibrant and busy. We just heard about Saranac Lake's new community store. But over the weekend nearly 200 people also turned out to help a local merchant move his store to Saranac Lake's main street. Brian Mann was there and sent this audio postcard.
(May 28, 2004) The discount giant Walmart is making a major push to expand in the North Country. The company plans to build bigger stores in Massena and Watertown, and new stores in Lowville and Leray, near Fort Drum. Tuesday Walmart announced plans to build a supercenter on Route 11 in Potsdam. As David Sommerstein reports, the news is renewing an old debate in the college town.
