(Oct 3, 2012) An exhibit in Elizabethtown uses debris, photos and video to tell the story of the destruction and devastation that was experienced in the region as a result of last year's Tropical Storm Irene and the Lake Champlain floods. More than 40 of the best photos from local photographers from last spring and summer were chosen for use in the exhibit, which closes on Columbus Day. Todd Moe talks with director Margaret Gibbs about the Raging Rivers exhibit at the Adirondack History Center Museum.

(Aug 1, 2011) Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the new 2% property tax cap into law on July 5th—and local governments are already feeling the effects. In the Essex County community of Elizabethtown, the Horace Nye nursing home cares for about 100 people. Now, county officials are trying to determine if it should be privatized. County officials debated the home’s future Monday at their regular morning meeting…Brian Mann was there, and he spoke to Nora Flaherty about what went on.
(Aug 25, 2010) Essex County has been exploring the possibility of selling the Horace Nye nursing home in Elizabethtown. But county manager Dan Palmer says it appears that no one is interested in buying the facility. Essex County faces a seven million dollar budget deficit next year. Nearly a third of that has been blamed on the expense of running the nursing home. Todd Moe has more.
(Jun 23, 2010) Essex County says it will begin looking for private companies willing to buy the county-owned Horace Nye Nursing Home. The Horace Nye Task Force, made up of members of the county board of supervisors, gave Essex County Manager Dan Palmer the go-ahead this week. A report issued this week by county officials found that the Horace Nye home, with 100 beds, is losing more than $2 million a year. Todd Moe has more.
In Essex County, Democrats make gains and history

(Feb 8, 2010) Republicans are hoping to stage a revival in the Northeast this year, inspired by the upset victory of Senator Scott Brown in Massachusetts. But here in northern New York, Democrats continue to make surprising gains, eroding the GOP’s decades-long dominance. Democrats Scott Murphy from Glens Falls and Bill Owens from Plattsburgh both won House seats in the last year. The party is also making inroads at the grassroots level, capturing local government offices. Brian Mann reports from Essex County.
North Country counties, school districts brace for massive cuts

(Dec 15, 2009) Governor Paterson's decision to withhold funding for local governments and school districts is sending shock waves through the North Country. People in this part of New York rely heavily on government for social services, most provided by towns and counties but paid for with state subsidies. Locals also look to local government for the highest paying and most dependable jobs. To understand just how large the impact of state budget cuts could be, Brian Mann looks in-depth this morning at Essex County. In Elizabethtown, the county seat, state subsidies shape every aspect of life and the economy.
(May 21, 2009) Federal officials in Albany are considering shutting down the oldest VA clinic in the North Country. The clinic in Elizabethtown, operated by the Elizabethtown Hospital, has been service military veterans since 1988. VA officials say the region's doctor shortage and the need to serve more vets in the Tri-Lakes area could prompt them to move the clinic to Saranac Lake. Brian Mann has details.
