Celebrating Holi, even in ice and snow

(Mar 12, 2009) This week marks the culmination of spring festivities in India. The last major festival before the end of the lunar year is called Holi, or the Festival of Colors. It’s celebrated by music, bonfires, feasts and people throwing colored powder and colored water at each other. In India, flowers are blooming, winter crops have been harvested, houses are cleaned and it’s a cause for celebration. Even in the North Country, some celebrate the festival of colors, love and hope.
A Cultural Melange at the French Festival

(Jul 14, 2005) In the early 1600s, French Jesuit priests paddled hundreds of miles up the St. Lawrence River. They settled on the fertile land by the river's source at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. It's estimated a third of today's population in northern Jefferson County is descended from those French settlers. Last weekend, Cape Vincent held its 37th annual French Festival to celebrate that heritage. North Country Public Radio was also celebrating there. It was the grand opening of our new translator in Cape Vincent, reaching listeners at 93.9 FM. David Sommerstein was on hand and sends this audio postcard.
(May 10, 2005) Millions of tulips are blossoming again this month in Canada's Capital Region — Ottawa and Gatineau. Known as North America's Tulip Capital, the 2005 Canadian Tulip Festival through May 23 is the world's largest celebration of its kind. This year the festival commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the end of Second World War and the Gift of Tulips to Canada from Holland. The theme is "A Celebration of Peace and Friendship". Todd Moe spoke with some of the organizers.

(Jun 18, 2002) High school musicians usually get a chance to perform for an audience at school jazz band or orchestra concerts. But aside from parties and the occasional high school dance, there are few opportunities for young rock musicians to test their licks in public. For 7 years now, the Norwood Village Green concert series has provided an outlet for high school bands to rock out. David Sommerstein takes us backstage at the High School Rock Band Festival.
