NYS misses out on $2.5 million grant for Follensby Pond

(Feb 5, 2013) The Adirondack Park's largest environmental group is blasting state officials for losing a $2.5 million Federal grant. The money would have helped to purchase Follensby Pond, a 14,000 acre tract of wild timberland near Tupper Lake. Adirondack Council spokesman John Sheehan says the state failed to come up with matching funds for the project. "It's not so big a surprise. It is a disappointment and it's one we hope the state can recover from in the near future," Sheehan said. The Environmental Protection Fund is used by New York to buy land for open space protection. Some green groups say Governor Cuomo has spent too much of the money on other projects.
APA chairman says Review Board can weigh in on land purchases

(Mar 7, 2011) A prominent pro-environment group has been pushing the Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board to stop commenting on the issue of state land-purchases in the Park. The Adirondack Council argues that the state-funded Review Board doesn't have a mandate to weigh in on the issue. But APA chairman Curt Stiles says Review Board is defending the Review Board's decision to issue a resolution opposing the Finch Pruyn and Follensby land deals.Chris Morris has details.
Imploding state budgets complicate land conservation efforts across Northeast

(Jul 29, 2009) As we heard yesterday, plummeting land values mean there are new opportunities for conserving open space, in New York and across the Northeast. Forests and farms that would have sold at premium prices two years ago are sitting on the market and in many areas prices are dropping. But state officials in the region are struggling to find money for conservation projects as their own budgets implode. As part of a collaboration with Northeastern stations, Brian Mann has our story.
NY shifts focus away from big Adirondack land purchases

(Jan 13, 2009) Governor Paterson's administration has unveiled its new Open Space Plan for New York state. This is the document that shapes much of Albany's conservation agenda. The new draft plan aims to shift the focus away from major land purchases. The 2009 version puts more weight on climate change and healthy communities. The new document comes at a time when two landmark conservation deals are still being hammered out in the Adirondacks. They include the Follensby Pond tract near Tupper Lake and the massive Finch, Pruyn project—both spearheaded by the Adirondack Nature Conservancy. Adirondack bureau chief Brian Mann talked about the Open Space plan with Martha Foley.Note: Public hearings on the Open Space plan will be held in the North Country this month, with sessions in Ray Brook and Watertown on January 22.
Big Adirondack land deals crash into NY economic crisis

(Dec 2, 2008) As New York’s fiscal crisis deepens, much of the debate in Albany has focused on schools and healthcare. But Governor David Paterson has also proposed using part of the Environmental Protection Fund, or EPF, to help close the budget gap. In the past, that money has been used to finance big conservation deals in the Adirondacks. Green groups want the state to buy tens of thousands of acres of forestland and add it to the Park's forest preserve. But as Brian Mann reports, a growing number of critics say land purchases should wait until New York's economy recovers.
Audio Postcard: first glimpse of Follensby Pond

(Oct 13, 2008) Last month, the Adirondack Nature Conservancy announced that it had inked a deal to buy Follensby Pond, near Tupper Lake. The pristine lake was once the site of the fabled "Philosopher's Camp," visited by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The Nature Conservancy paid $16 million for the property. The group hopes the 14,000-acre parcel will eventually be purchased by the state of New York and added to the forest preserve. Follensby has been off-limits to the public for more than a century and it could be months or even years before hikers and paddlers are allowed into the area. But last week, Brian Mann was invited to spend an autumn day paddling Follensby Pond. He was the first journalist to visit the property and sent back this exclusive audio postcard.
With Follensby Pond deal, Adirondack environmentalists score prize

(Sep 19, 2008) The Nature Conservancy announced yesterday that it has purchased another 14,000-acre parcel in the Adirondacks. The property, which lies on the outskirts of Tupper Lake, includes a pristine lake called Follensby Pond and more than ten miles of shoreline along the Raquette River. It is also the site of the fabled "Philosopher's Camp," visited by Ralph Waldo Emerson in the 1850s. The Conservancy will pay $16 million to the McCormick family, who live in Manchester, Vermont. As Brian Mann reports, green groups and outdoor recreation advocates have been chasing this deal for more than a decade.
(Sep 18, 2008) The Adirondack Nature Conservancy announced today that it has purchased 14,600 acres near Tupper Lake. The acreage includes the famous Follensby Pond, where Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Russell Lowell, and Louis Agassiz held their famous "Philosopher's Camp."The 1,000-acre pond has been viewed by environmentalists and recreation enthusiasts as one of the last remaining gems that they hoped to preserve.
Historic Follensby auction draws hundreds to Tupper Lake

(Aug 28, 2007) You never really know what the North Country's big events of the summer will be. This year, hands down, the attention grabbers were a couple of big auctions. Fox Island, near Cape Vincent, sold over the weekend for $3.78 million to New Jersey resident Vance Wilson. In Tupper Lake, more than four hundred buyers turned out for the sale of antiques and other treasures from Follensby Park, one of the Adirondacks' most extravagant, private great camps. Brian Mann joined the crowd on Saturday and sent this audio postcard.
Follensby Park auction offers rare glimpse of Adk history

(Aug 2, 2007) Later this month, Adirondackers will get a glimpse of local history that's been hidden for nearly a hundred years. Antiques and artifacts from the great camp lodge at Follensby Park, near Tupper Lake, will be sold at auction on August 25th. The sale has sparked speculation that the 14,500-acre estate might be sold to a conservation group or to the state of New York. The property includes one of the most beautiful and pristine lakes in the Adirondack Park. Brian Mann spoke with Kip Blanchard from Potsdam. He's the auctioneer who was hired to sell hundreds of objects from the White Birches lodge.
