(Aug 25, 2006) Heavy rains this summer have meant few forest fires in the Adirondacks. North Country firefighters returned this month from keeping their skills sharp in the dry West. Adam Pickett was among a 19-person crew from New York that worked on the Bald and Rush forest fires in southern and northern California for two weeks. Pickett is a DEC forest ranger in the Old Forge-Herkimer County area. He told David Sommerstein he was part of a hand crew that fights wildfires on foot.

(Jul 9, 2002) People in most parts of New York State noticed a haze and smog this weekend, caused by fires in the Canadian province of Quebec. While the change of wind patterns meant clearer air on Monday, health organizations that monitor air quality say there could be more unhealthy air coming this week. Karen Dewitt reports.
(Mar 26, 2002) Like the rest of the Northeast, the North Country is experiencing drought or near-drought conditions. Climatologists are expecting high fire danger in the region's forests this summer. David Sommerstein reports New York is offering help to local fire departments that are often the first to respond to wildfires.
