(May 10, 2013) Gov. Andrew Cuomo, joined by union and business leaders, and representatives from county governments, offered more details of a plan to build three new gambling casinos. The governor says he wants to limit the locations to upstate regions for now, to prop up the failing economy. He says upstate needs jobs like it needs "oxygen". And he says having a downstate location would devalue the upstate centers.

(Dec 25, 2012) Governor Cuomo and state lawmakers will face a number of issues in 2013 ranging from raising the state's minimum wage, to campaign finance reform, to gun control. Some of the topics that are expected to dominate the session are the so -called progressive issues. Governor Cuomo, who has set the agenda for the first two legislative sessions of his term, seems to be planning on doing the same in 2013. And he's already introduced what he calls a "litmus test" of issues in exchange for conditional support of a new Senate governing coalition.
(Dec 19, 2012) Governor Cuomo shed some more light Tuesday on his plans for expanding gambling in New York. But he said he didn't want to identify specific places where non-native owned casinos should be built. Cuomo said that should be the job of the gaming industry in a competitive bidding process. "I would leave it to the operators, the experts, to say, you tell me," said Cuomo, "within these regions of the state, where do you think the best market is, where would you site it to maximize economic opportunity, maximize job growth." [full story]

Brasher supervisor sees a casino in the future

(May 23, 2012) Gov. Cuomo’s proposal to expand gambling in New York gave one rural St. Lawrence County leader an idea."I was thinking when I read the governor’s proposal to put seven casinos in New York State, I thought, why not put one in the northern tier? Maybe we could get one up here." Brasher Town Supervisor James Dawson told town board members last week a casino would be a great way to attract visitors to the region…and to pump up St. Lawrence County’s flagging economy. The 900 acres Dawson has in mind has already been considered for a racetrack and entertainment complex. That development failed, and the land ended up in bankruptcy court. Dawson told Nora Flaherty a casino there could anchor a host of spin-off development.
A casino in Brasher? Why not?!

(May 22, 2012) A troubled parcel of more than 900 acres of land in Brasher and Norfolk may one day be a casino. At least, that’s what Brasher Town Supervisor James Dawson is proposing. Dawson told town board members last week a casino would be a great way to attract visitors to the region…and to pump up St. Lawrence County’s flagging economy. Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed a constitutional amendment to create seven commercial casinos across the state. Brasher is only a few miles from the Akwesasne Mohawk casino near Massena, and Dawson says two casinos in the area could make it a destination for Canadian tourists.
(Mar 15, 2012) The New York Senate and Assembly approved new electoral district lines, as Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders announced agreement on a number of other unrelated issues yesterday. Advocates immediately called the deal on the new lines an assault on voter rights. The redistricting announcement last night came as backroom talks yielded agreements on expansion of the state’s DNA data base, pension reform, and an amendment to allow more gambling in New York. Karen DeWitt reports. [full story]
