Plans for whitewater "play park" in Canton

(May 12, 2011) This weekend, the village of Canton will be a haven for flatwater paddlers with the 50th anniversary of the Rushton canoe races. There are also plans in the works to make better use of the Grasse River's whitewater. Planners are exploring construction of a "whitewater play park" at four sites on the Grasse in Canton. There's a public meeting on the subject tonight at 5:30 at the Grasse River Heritage building in the village. David Sommerstein caught up with two of the organizers, Baylor Johnson and Dan McConnell.
Massena abandons Kroc center plans

(May 27, 2009) Another blow for the reeling community of Massena. After years of work and planning, the village is giving up on its bid to build a $25-million community center. Massena was the only town in Upstate New York to win a highly competitive Kroc grant to build the facility. But the community couldn't raise enough money to fulfill the grant requirements. Massena town supervisor Gary Edwards says the community is shocked and disappointed. Massena has been devastated by job losses, with about 1000 layoffs this year, including the permanent closure of the General Motors plant and the temporary shutdown of an Alcoa smelter. Massena had to raise $2.4 million in operating expenses for the Ray and Joan Kroc foundation to give $23 million for the construction and endowment for a state-of-the-art community center. Major Donald Lance is the regional division commander for the Salvation Army, which was leading the campaign and would have run the center. He told David Sommerstein after three years of fundraising, the campaign had only raised a third of its goal.
Grasse River Heritage park opens Sunday

(Jun 6, 2008) A new interpretive park in downtown Canton opens to the public this weekend. The Grasse River Heritage Corporation has spent ten years turning a historic industrial site on the river into a place to enjoy nature. The goal has been to improve the natural, historic and cultural value of islands on the Grasse River. Todd Moe toured the new downtown waterfront heritage park with Grasse River Heritage Corporation board president Peter Wyckoff on the 100-foot boardwalk that overlooks the northern end of Falls Island. The grand opening is Sunday at 2pm.
Massena's hydropower hopes fuel debate

(Apr 15, 2008) In 1997, Massena’s 200-year old dam breached, sending miles of slow, flat water downstream. Environmentalists saw the change as a victory for free-flowing rivers and the endangered fish that thrive in them. But many Massena residents miss the high, placid waters of the old Grasse River. People used to fish and boat there. Local leaders have started a movement to return the pond, by building a hydropower dam half-a-mile downriver from where the old dam used to be. The dam’s fueled a classic debate of the economy versus the environment, but with a twist. A Superfund site of toxic chemicals is also in the mix. David Sommerstein reports.
Grasse River Island Clean, But Way Over Budget

(May 4, 2006) A Canton not-for-profit group is $40,000 in the hole after a clean-up of Grasse River waterfront went way over budget. Removing contaminated sediment from Willow Island cost almost $600,000 more than expected. As David Sommerstein reports, the state will pay for most of it.
(Jul 8, 2005) An effort to revitalize Canton's waterfront got a boost from a state grant yesterday. State Senator Jim Wright announced a $100,000 to help a local group improve the natural, historic, and cultural value of islands on the Grasse River. Wright said the project is a part of a push to create a greenway along the St. Lawrence River and its tributaries. David Sommerstein reports.
Critics: Area Conservation Lands ?Hammered? By Logging

(Sep 10, 2004) State officials are investigating claims of improper logging on timberlands in St. Lawrence County. The 19,000 acre parcel – which straddles the north branch of the Grasse River — is protected by a state conservation deal. As Brian Mann reports, critics say problems with the project raise questions about bigger easement deals signed with International Paper and Champion.
(May 11, 2004) The high water season of spring gives paddlers an opportunity to run the North Country's best stretches of whitewater. Every year the Adirondack Mountain Club's Laurentian chapter sponsors a classic run on the Grasse River in southwestern St. Lawrence County. From the put-in at Lampson Falls to the town of Russell, the river roars down 9 cascades and miles of rapids. David Sommerstein hitched a ride in the trip leader's canoe and sends this audio postcard.
Water Watchers: Canton Students Monitor Grasse River

(Oct 25, 2002) This month marks the 30th anniversary of Clean Water Act, a milestone in our nation's efforts to protect water resources. To honor the 30-year anniversary of that legislation, communities in every state celebrated Nation Water Monitoring Day last week. It was an opportunity for everyone to learn how to help protect local waterways by becoming citizen monitors. Todd Moe tagged along as Canton High School students scrutinized the physical, chemical and biological aspects of a river in their backyard [full story]
