How will new laws affect North Country gun dealers?

(Feb 5, 2013) This week we're looking closely at some of the consequences of New York's new gun control law.Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls the law's provisions "common sense." It closes loopholes in the state's assault weapons ban and limits magazine clips to seven bullets; background checks will now be required for ammunition purchases; and for private sale of guns, and there will be stiffer penalties for using illegal weapons.Gun buyers and gun sellers are giving the rules a close read. In the North Country, buying a gun doesn't always mean heading to a big box store like Gander Mountain or Dick's. The region is home to over 200 smaller gun retailers, many of which are adjusting to the new laws.

(Jan 30, 2013) The New York State Police held informational meetings with gun owners and dealers yesterday around the state. The meetings were designed to answer questions about how New York's tough new gun control law will be implemented. That law, signed by Governor Cuomo earlier this month, includes strict regulation of assault rifles, closer tracking of gun sales, and a phased-in ban of high-capacity ammunition magazines. At a meeting in Lake Placid, gun owners from the North Country asked for clarification about how the rules would affect their gun collections. But they also expressed frustration, anger and defiance.
(Jan 14, 2013) Vice President Joe Biden is expected to deliver a comprehensive package of gun control recommendations to President Barack Obama tomorrow. According to The Associated Press, Senators plan to introduce a bill that would ban assault weapons and limit the size of ammunition magazines, but the head of the National Rifle Association and at least one senator say Congress is unlikely to pass it.The measures come in the wake of the school shooting in Connecticut that killed 27 people. They're part of a renewed consideration, nationwide, of gun control regulations.Roughly 200 protesters turned up over the weekend at a gun show in Saratoga Springs that became a flash point in the debate. The show on Saturday at the Saratoga City Center has gone on for three decades, but it drew new publicity after the school shooting in Newtown.
(Jan 11, 2013) Governor Cuomo dampened expectations for a quick settlement on a package of gun control bills, saying he does not have a timeline for agreement with the legislature. The governor says he's still pushing, but one day after legislative leaders said they believed a deal was "achievable" and could come this week, Governor Cuomo now says there is no timeline, for "when or if" a deal on anti gun measures will be reached. One of the toughest challenges for school officials and students is how to make the schools safer without compromising convenience and the educational environment. Chris Knight reports.
