Art that conveys a sense of immediacy

(Aug 14, 2012) Many Adirondack artists will tell you that our region offers nearly all the elements a landscape painter looks for - mountains, trees, waterways and ever-changing hues of green, gray and blue. You'll find dozens of artists outdoors this week in the Adirondacks painting "plein air" during Saranac Lake's Fourth Annual Plein Air Festival, part of the "Great Adirondack Days" celebration. It's a time-honored tradition, particularly by artists who want to convey a sense of immediacy. They'll find a spot with a great view of a mountain or along a stream, prop up an easel and paint just as they see it. Most works are completed within hours on the spot. Spontaneity is key. Bugs, rain and fleeting sunlight are challenges.Last summer, Todd Moe tagged along when Lake Placid artist Jackie Altman returned to a favorite spot with views of some of the High Peaks.
Iowa Pacific wins fight to rebuild railroad into Adirondack Park

(Jun 19, 2012) A Federal agency has given a Chicago-based company the green light to revive a 30-mile industrial railroad that stretches from North Creek to Newcomb. The track cuts through the Adirondack Park into the eastern High Peaks, one of the most popular destinations for hikers and campers.Green groups opposed the project, arguing that the rail line violated protected forest preserve land. But as Brian Mann reports, they now say their fight to block the project is over.
Climbing, collecting and shaping rocks

(Jan 6, 2012) About 20 years ago, Matt Horner started climbing rocks and ice in the High Peaks. Today, the Keene Valley resident continues to work and play around granite boulders, but he's found a way to make art. More than 60 of his works — carved sculptures and stone vessels — are on display at View in Old Forge this season.Matt is also a professional fly-fishing guide and well-acquainted with the smooth river stones in the region. He told Todd Moe that shaping stones started a few years ago while working on a rock wall.
On a sweltering summer day, why not climb a High Peak?

(Jul 8, 2010) The North Country is caught in the same summer heat wave that’s gripping much of the eastern US and Canada. For most people, the heat means a lot of time spent with the air conditioner, or a trip to the local swimming hole. But our reporter Brian Mann and his brother Allen decided that the best place to cool off was the top of Noonmark Mountain in the High Peaks. Brian sent this audio postcard.
Decision could open Adirondack roads to motorized use

(May 22, 2009) A Lake Placid snowmobiler has won a landmark case over motorized access to a road in the Adirondacks. Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis has dismissed a ticket issued to Jim McCulley for operating his pick-up truck on Old Mountain Road. The old road runs between North Elba and Keene in Essex County. It's part of the popular Jackrabbit cross country ski trail. As Chris Knight reports, the decision turns on the point of when an old road is technically abandoned…or not. And it could have implications for Forest Preserve roads throughout the Adirondack Park.
(Mar 30, 2009) Spring weather came early this year in the North Country, but there’s still plenty of snow in the higher elevations of the Adirondacks.

(Sep 19, 2008) A deal for the Follensby Pond acquisition has been sought by environmental groups, paddlers and hikers for a long time. Martha Foley talked with Phil Brown, editor of the Adirondack Explorer magazine, about the significance of the purchase, and local reaction. He said local concerns focus on property tax revenue (which could increase) and public access.
