Art that conveys a sense of immediacy

(Aug 14, 2012) Many Adirondack artists will tell you that our region offers nearly all the elements a landscape painter looks for - mountains, trees, waterways and ever-changing hues of green, gray and blue. You'll find dozens of artists outdoors this week in the Adirondacks painting "plein air" during Saranac Lake's Fourth Annual Plein Air Festival, part of the "Great Adirondack Days" celebration. It's a time-honored tradition, particularly by artists who want to convey a sense of immediacy. They'll find a spot with a great view of a mountain or along a stream, prop up an easel and paint just as they see it. Most works are completed within hours on the spot. Spontaneity is key. Bugs, rain and fleeting sunlight are challenges.Last summer, Todd Moe tagged along when Lake Placid artist Jackie Altman returned to a favorite spot with views of some of the High Peaks.
Iowa Pacific wins fight to rebuild railroad into Adirondack Park

(Jun 19, 2012) A Federal agency has given a Chicago-based company the green light to revive a 30-mile industrial railroad that stretches from North Creek to Newcomb. The track cuts through the Adirondack Park into the eastern High Peaks, one of the most popular destinations for hikers and campers.Green groups opposed the project, arguing that the rail line violated protected forest preserve land. But as Brian Mann reports, they now say their fight to block the project is over.
Climbing, collecting and shaping rocks

(Jan 6, 2012) About 20 years ago, Matt Horner started climbing rocks and ice in the High Peaks. Today, the Keene Valley resident continues to work and play around granite boulders, but he's found a way to make art. More than 60 of his works — carved sculptures and stone vessels — are on display at View in Old Forge this season.Matt is also a professional fly-fishing guide and well-acquainted with the smooth river stones in the region. He told Todd Moe that shaping stones started a few years ago while working on a rock wall.

(Jul 13, 2011) A North Country teen spent most of his summer vacation working on an original musical. Road to Dannemora debuts at Keene Central School on Saturday night. 16-year-old Sam Balzac wrote the music and worked with his mother, Kathy Recchia, on the lyrics. They're both long time members of the Book and Blanket Players, a community theater group in Jay. Todd Moe spoke with Sam and Kathy about the process of creating a musical. "The Road to Dannemora" will be performed at the Keene Central School Auditorium this Saturday night, 7pm. Free admission. Donations Accepted.
