Among the stars at the Oscars

(Feb 28, 2013) A SUNY Potsdam theater student was among six college students on stage during the Oscars last Sunday night. ChaRon Brabham, from Brooklyn, was one of the winners of The Oscar Experience College Search, and is pursuing a career in film. She produced a video that answered the question: How will you contribute to the future of movies? Brabham spent most of last week in Hollywood and got the chance to mingle with some of the celebrities at the Academy Awards ceremony. She and the other five college students appeared onstage and delivered Oscar statuettes to the telecast presenters during the show.Todd Moe caught up with ChaRon Brabham after she returned to campus this week. She says it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Keeping a movie theater quaint, and open

(Aug 8, 2012) A South Glens Falls man opened a small movie theater earlier this summer and says he’s not worried about the film industry’s decision to switch distributing first run features from film to digital. Jerry Aratare says his single-screen Cinematheque shows foreign and first-run movies, though usually a couple of weeks later than the larger movie theaters. The 82-year-old Aratare got his first movie theater job as a projectionist in 1951 in Vermont. He’s opened about a dozen small theaters in the region over the years. He told Todd Moe that his newest theater has 66 seats, a decades-old projector he’s dubbed “the old workhorse”, and a “hometown” atmosphere. This year's festival will feature screenings of films from local, national and International filmmakers, special guests and events such as the North Country Shorts and the return of the 24 hour student film-making competition, "Sleepless in Lake Placid." Todd Moe spoke with Tim Brearton, the festival's project specialist.
Heard up North: Drowned Cities

(Oct 2, 2006) The St Lawrence River Power Project forever changed the landscape of the North Country. The hydro power dams erected almost 50 years ago expanded the Seaway, flooding 100 square miles of land on both sides of the river. St Lawrence County leaders who now argue for cheap power to stay here in the North Country say the state should remember that sacrifice. Most of the flooding was on the Canadian side; we’ll hear about the ’10 lost villages’ in a moment. On the American side, parts of Waddington and Massena were flooded, and hundreds of farmhouses along the old Route 37 were moved. Dale Hobson was an eyewitness. He spoke with Gregory Warner.
(Jun 4, 2004) The 5th annual Lake Placid Film Festival is in full gear. 60 features and documentaries—including 12 world premieres—are showing in the village through Sunday. Oragnizers made some changes this year to make the event more accessible for wider audiences and attract more sponsors. As David Sommerstein reports, the festival is still a film lover's paradise.
(Jun 10, 2002) The third annual Lake Placid Film Forum closed Sunday evening. The festival's top award went to a Canadian film called Fast Runner, an epic about an Inuit family in the arctic. The top documentary prize went to Photos to Send, a look at the work of photographer Dorothea Lange. Winning the Festival's special Honorable Mention category was a movie that's not quite a movie. September 11: Response is described by its creators as a visual archive of what New Yorkers experienced on that day. Brian Mann's story about the work includes strong and graphic language.
