(Apr 6, 2006) State police and forest rangers say a Tupper Lake man drowned over the weekend on Middle Saranac Lake. Gary Cyra failed to return from an ice-fishing trip. He was an employee at Sunmount in Tupper Lake. Searchers found his parked car at the South Creek boat launch. They used search dogs Tuesday in the woods around the parking area and continued the search yesterday. State forest ranger Lieutenant Gary Friedrich led the effort. He spoke yesterday afternoon with Brian Mann.
(Feb 24, 2004) The village limits of Port Henry expand towards Vermont in the depths of winter to include scores of little fishing shelters that dot the thick ice surface of Bulwagga Bay. On weekends, local motels and restaurants are filled by winter fishermen. Sportsmen give a boost to the local economy, but 50 years ago, commercial fishing in the winter was common. Earl Sprague remembers when ice fishing provided pocket money for him, and a living for others. Varick Chittenden has this story.
