(Mar 20, 2013) Today is the first day of spring. It's also World Storytelling Day — a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling, celebrated every year on the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn in the southern. Everyone has a story to tell, and there are lots of storytellers in our region. For over 25 years, Mitch Lee has been telling tales about life in the mountains and the big woods. He was born and raised in the west-central Adirondacks. When he isn't busy spinning tales at schools, libraries and community groups, Lee runs the Parks Department in Inlet, NY where he helps promote local tourism. He also writes the weekly column, Growing up Adirondack, for The Weekly Adirondack newspaper. Todd Moe spoke with Mitch Lee about his love of telling tales and asked him to share a favorite local story called, The White Feather.
(Feb 16, 2012) A small Adirondack community has reclaimed its world record for the largest raft of canoes, kayaks and guideboats. Last September, Inlet’s “One Square Mile of Hope” committee organized the flotilla on Fourth Lake as part of an event to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Adele Burnett, Tourism Director for the Town of Inlet, helped organize the event. She says her group recently received official notification from Guiness World Records that they are back in the record book.
Fighting cancer and a bit of fun in Inlet

(Sep 14, 2011) Canoeists and kayakers will make some waves toward a cure for breast cancer in Inlet on Saturday, September 24th. Hundreds of canoes and kayaks will converge in a large flotilla on Fourth Lake as part of the "One Square Mile of Hope" event. In 2008, more than $50,000 was raised for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, and 1,104 paddlers set a world record for the most canoes/kayaks within a square mile on a body of water at the same time.Organizers are going for the title again this month because Pittsburgh won the title last year and has challenged Inlet to a world title "float-off". Todd Moe talks with organizer Connie Perry, of "Frisky Otter Tours" in Inlet, who says the event is open to everyone.
(Nov 19, 2010) State officials are close to approving a new management plan for the Moose River Plains region of the Adirondack Park. The compromise deal would create more than 12 thousand acres of new wilderness in Hamilton County. It would also establish new trail corridors for snowmobiles and mountain bikes. As Brian Mann reports, the plan has been more than a decade in the making.
