Immigration bureaucracy lands legal residents in detention

(Sep 17, 2010) One wrinkle in the immigration picture has been particularly difficult for foreign students and professionals working in the U.S. There are two agencies within Homeland Security that handle visas. The one that issues them is U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. It says a foreign national may reapply or change a visa status “in a timely manner” before its expiration date. The visa itself may take weeks or months to process. The U.S. Border Patrol however, only looks at the expiration date.If a person’s visa has expired, that person is subject to detention. Immigration lawyer Hilary Fraser of Ithaca has defended clients caught between these two interpretations of the law. She told David Sommerstein one was a Filipino national living in Watertown.
(Dec 3, 2004) Behind every winter sport, there’s probably a founder who was just trying to stay warm and alert through the dark months. That’s the history behind one of the more obscure sports – Rutabaga Curling. The seventh annual Rutabaga Curling Championships will be held Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Ithaca Farmers' Market. David Sommerstein came across the Championships in 2002, and sent this tuber-tossing postcard.
(Oct 20, 2004) Senator Charles Schumer largely ignored his two challengers in a debate held at Cornell University last night.
(Apr 15, 2003) A Canton Farmers Market vendor wants to start a barter system economy using printed currency. A prototype of the exchange system has worked in the central New York city of Ithaca for about a decade. Martha Foley talks with Steve Johnson, who runs Adirondack Enterprises. He thinks the Ithaca Hours program could work in the Canton-Potsdam area, and spread throughout the North Country.
