(Jul 20, 2009) You don't have to go to Madison Square Garden to enjoy the beauty and drama of different breeds going paw to paw for prize ribbons. Each summer, various regional dog shows practically come to you. Marilyn Ryan of Ottawa dropped by a three-day event in near-by Kars, Ontario this past weekend. She's today's Heard Up North.
Heard Up North: movers take care

(Jun 20, 2008) Upper Canada Village will officially open Its first additional building in 14 years tomorrow: a "new" lodge to expand living displays of life along the St Lawrence in the 1860s. The building was rescued from the Rideau River village of Kars, home turf for our correspondent, Lucy Martin. Townspeople there got a free show back in January as the shuttered structure was jacked up, loaded onto a flatbed, and trucked down the road to the living history museum in Morrisburg. Just two guys handled most of the move: Greg Sullivan, the quiet one, from Chesterville, and Dave Drummond of Almonte, who didn't mind doing a little play-by-play as he began to jack the building onto a stack of wooden blocks.

(Feb 26, 2008) Life has its share of guilty pleasures. Ottawa Corespondent Lucy Martin found one of hers in the village of Kars. The community runs a summer fair which often includes a demolition derby. The derby's back, but this time for their winter carnival. On a crisp day, with blue skies and lots of snow, hearty fans from all walks of life gathered to watch people destroy things—just for the fun of it.
