(Feb 7, 2013) Like the protagonist in his debut novel, Here Be Monsters, Jamie Sheffield spent his childhood in New York City, and "escaped" to the Adirondacks later in life. Sheffield spent most of last summer writing his mystery that pitches Tyler Cunningham, an unconventional hero, into a criminal whirlwind for which he is unprepared. Todd Moe talks with the Lake Clear writer about his first book, and the process of writing and publishing.
(Oct 2, 2012) While races for president, Congress, Assembly and other offices are sure to draw voters to the polls next month, a local campaign in the Saranac Lake area has also been sparking a lot of debate. Two candidates who are veterans of the local political scene are vying to be supervisor of the town of Harrietstown. The town's management of the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear has proved to be one of the most contentious issues in the campaign so far. Chris Knight reports.
(Jan 30, 2012) Officials in Harrietstown have organized a new citizens committee to study the cost and future management of the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear. The airport was the target of a scathing report from the state Comptroller's office earlier this month that found the facility had been mismanaged.
Debate continues over closing Lake Clear?s elementary school

(Feb 21, 2008) A consultant hired by the Saranac Lake School Board outlined options for possible downsizing of the Saranac Lake School District at a school board meeting last night. Management Advisory Group is recommending the district close Lake Clear Elementary School due to declining enrollment. About 40 Lake Clear parents and other district residents showed up at last night’s meeting, most objecting to the closing of their neighborhood school. As Chris Knight reports, school board members appear to be split on the issue.
Big sky Airlines collapse part of national trend

(Jan 21, 2008) Since airline de-regulation in the 1970s, America's small towns have struggled to find companies and passengers willing to use their airports. Here in the North Country, five airports are currently without service following the collapse of Big Sky airlines. Two new carriers have applied to take over those routes. But as Brian Mann reports, the number of airlines willing to serve rural airports is dwindling, despite Federal subsidies that total more than 100 million dollars a year.
