(Jul 26, 2011) Our occasional series, “Moving the World” continues with a conversation with two St. Lawrence county men who are producing a documentary about water relief in Uganda. Ben Hull and Joshua McGrath leave for Africa this week to begin filming the documentary that will focus on efforts to install rainwater collection tanks on community buildings to provide safe, accessible drinking water. Todd Moe spoke with them earlier this summer as they prepared for the trip.
A museum's resident steam engine

(Jun 10, 2011) Traditional farming will be on display in Madrid this weekend. Antique farm implements, an old sawmill, draft horses and steam power are all part of the 29th annual Antique Gas and Steam Engine Exhibition at the St. Lawrence Power Museum in Madrid. A hundred years ago, steam power was used on farms during the fall harvest. Black steam engines on massive steel wheels traveled from farm to farm. They belched smoke, hissed steam and drove belts typically attached to threshers and choppers. Todd Moe visited the resident steam engine at the Madrid museum that was used in Richville to crush rocks.
A nearly forgotten legacy in stained-glass

(Jun 1, 2011) The windows in many of the rural churches in the North Country were created by one of the best stained-glass window artists in the country. Harry James Horwood designed stained-glass windows in the late 19th and early 20th century. His factory was in Ogdensburg. A local historian says Horwood supplied windows for country churches and even the parliament building in Ottawa. Todd Moe talks with Dave Martin, who has spent the last five years photographing church windows in St. Lawrence, Franklin and Jefferson counties. Martin is determined to find out more about the family that was devoted to the art of stained-glass.
