(Aug 6, 2010) Last month, a group of veteran environmental activists announced that they are forming a new advocacy group called Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve.Leaders of the organization were all let go recently by another newly-formed green group called Protect the Adirondacks. All this change and turmoil comes at a time when the Adirondack’s environmental community has struggled with a steep drop-off in fundraising.Brian Mann spoke about the future of the Park’s green movement with Dave Gibson, one of the founders of Adirondack Wild.
Pea soup and johnnycake cancellation draws attention to homecooking in public

(Feb 16, 2009) The cancellation of a popular event in Canton earlier this month is raising questions about serving food at community gatherings. Not-for-profits across the North Country rely on volunteers to cook food, often at home, for their small events. People may not know it, but they’re often in violation of public health codes. David Sommerstein reports on the balance between food safety and the social value of breaking bread.
Latest battle at Ft. Ticonderoga is with $2.5 million debt

(Aug 15, 2008) Fort Ticonderoga is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the North Country. The sprawling 5,000-acre outdoor museum on the shore of Lake Champlain is also one of the most important landmarks in American history. But a feud with a major donor has left the privately owned museum deep in debt and scrambling to raise funds to pay for a new education center. Fort Ticonderoga’s chairman has raised the possibility of closing the facility, or auctioning part of its collection. As Brian Mann reports, historians and tourism officials say Ticonderoga is too important to lose.
(Dec 17, 2007) Employees at Com Links, one of the region's leading social service agencies, say the not-for-profit organization is in crisis. Staff-members signed a petition earlier this month calling for removal of the group's long-time CEO, Nancy Reich. They point to deepening financial problems and to a series of personnel disputes, including a controversy surrounding a sexual harassment case. But as independent producer Jacob Resneck reports, the president of ComLinks' board of directors says he still has confidence in Reich's leadership.
(Sep 10, 2003) Not for profit groups are calling on Governor Pataki to release $200 million in legislative member items, which have been tied up in the ongoing budget fight. The groups say some of the money is meant for them, and they will have to cut services and even close altogether if they don't get the funding soon. Karen DeWitt reports.
