Artists who look to the forest for ideas, inspiration

(Feb 27, 2013) Considered America's oldest working woodlands, the Northern Forest — stretching from the Tug Hill through the Adirondacks to the coast of Maine — is also home to a remarkable range of traditional artists. This month, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, opened a new exhibit that features art from among the trees. TAUNY executive director Jill Breit says the concept behind Artists of the Forest is to showcase how artists are using the resources that are growing around them in the woods. The pieces featured in the show come from northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
(Sep 12, 2012) The Fish and Wildlife Service says a rare songbird that nests atop mountains in the Adirondacks and Green Mountains may need protection as an endangered species. Todd Moe spoke with Long Lake birder Joan Collins, who has been tracking the Bicknell's Thrush for more than a decade. She says biologists are alarmed by the decline in the bird's numbers over the past year.
Snow removal pits clean streets against clean water

(Feb 10, 2011) There’s been an historic amount of snowfall around the Northeast. Snow totals range from 5 feet in Burlington, almost 7 feet in New York City, to almost 6 feet in Boston. The extreme snowfall has pitted disposing snow against protecting the water. Many cities in the Northeast have run out of places to put the snow. They’re asking for permission to dump it in waterways. As part of a collaboration with Northeast stations, Monica Brady-Myerov reports from Boston.
