(May 21, 2009) Federal officials in Albany are considering shutting down the oldest VA clinic in the North Country. The clinic in Elizabethtown, operated by the Elizabethtown Hospital, has been service military veterans since 1988. VA officials say the region's doctor shortage and the need to serve more vets in the Tri-Lakes area could prompt them to move the clinic to Saranac Lake. Brian Mann has details.
Top teachers union leader calls for property tax reform

(May 19, 2009) Today across the North Country, voters will elect new school board members. They'll also decide the fate of their local school district budgets, which are largely funded by local property taxes. Propety tax reform is on many minds this year. In Albany, Gov. David Paterson has renewed his call for property tax reform. He meets with legislatve leaders today to push for reform legislation before the end of the session in late June. The national economic crisis has reshaped the discussion of public education. Many districts in the region are being forced to cut teachers and other staff, while raising property taxes. Brian Mann spoke with Richard Iannuzzi, head of New York State United Teachers, the most powerful teachers union in New York. Iannuzzi says federal stimulus money has given New Yorkers time to rethink the way we pay for our schools.
