(Nov 28, 2012) There's snow on the ground in the Adirondacks. The winter tourism industry in the region is hoping to bounce back this season after last year's disastrously warm weather. But winter tourism in the region faces some big challenges going forward, including questions about climate change and competition from big venues and destinations in New Hampshire and Vermont. Ted Blazer is head of the state-run Olympic Regional Development Authority, which is headquartered in Lake Placid. Much of the future of winter tourism in the region depends on him.
(Jun 28, 2012) The Conference Center at Lake Placid held its grand opening about a year ago, and the people in charge of running it say the facility is doing well so far. The conference center is operated by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority and Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau. Officials gave ORDA’s Board of Directors an update on the venue’s first year during a meeting in Lake Placid last week. As Chris Morris reports, the managers of the conference center believe it’s just starting to live up to its potential.
(May 8, 2012) The Olympic Regional Development Authority will begin operating the Belleayre Mountain resort in the Catskills later this year. That's a huge change for the organization, which had focused exclusively on Adirondack venues, in Wilmington, Lake Placid and North Creek.Once Belleayre is added to ORDA's list of venues, two new members from the Catskills will sit on the organization's board. But currently, only one board member represents communities in Warren County and the North Creek area.
(Dec 16, 2011) For those in the skiing business, this year’s relatively warm temperatures and lack of snow are spelling trouble. Ski areas typically open around Thanksgiving and when there’s no snow on the ground, they make it.But it’s been too warm for snowmaking. Ideally, it should be about 10 degrees. So many areas in the northeast have been forced to delay opening. Others have been operating at reduced capacity. And that’s hurting the bottom line.
