Heard up North: Slab City, Sodom, and Swastika

(Sep 15, 2006) We’ve been running a series about place names in the North Country. It started out by accident – a feature on Saint Lawrence led to more calls about local place names and their origins. Yesterday on All Before Five, host Gregory Warner and our own resident poet and historian Dale Hobson sat down to talk about a few place names you asked us to investigate. Starting with Slab City, a small area in West Potsdam. Gregory called Joretta Creighton, a 3rd generation Slab City resident who owns Bailey’s Florists. She says the place got its name from the slab wood that was the refuse of the area’s paper mills.
Newton Falls mill takes baby steps

(Jul 21, 2006) A plan to re-open the paper mill in Newton Falls took a very small step forward this week. A board voted unanimously to support the site’s inclusion in Potsdam’s Empire Zone. That would make it eligible for tax breaks and low-cost power. A group led by Dennis Bunnell wants to re-open the paper mill as Newton Falls Fine Paper Company. The company wants to invest $20 million in the plant and hire 97 people. But after a year and a half of work, the plan is still preliminary. David Sommerstein has more.
(Nov 12, 2001) The boundaries of the Empire State Development Zone in Watertown have been expanded to include a new paper manufacturing company that will renovate and expand the former mill in the village of Deferiet. Newstech New York Incorporated is expected to be up and running by February and if the company meets its commitments on hiring and investment, it could see millions of dollars in tax incentives. Jody Tosti reports. After nearly five months, the unions are still on the picket line. As Brian Mann reports, both sides are offering concessions, but a deal is unlikely any time soon.
