(Sep 19, 2012) The old public school building in Star Lake has a new mission as an exhibit center and tourist attraction. And the grassroots effort to restore the 1890s structure will be honored by Adirondack Architectural Heritage at a ceremony in Lake George next week. It's one of six North Country sites that will receive 2012 Stewardship awards for preservation efforts. For more than six years, a group of Clifton-Fine area residents has worked to restore the old school. They see it as a cornerstone for tourism, economic development and local pride.
Gulf oil spill threatens migrating northern shorebirds

(Jun 21, 2010) Shorebirds who spend their summers along the coasts of Maine, Massachusetts and New York are safe, for now, from the effects of the massive BP oil spill that's fouling the waters and coastline of the Gulf of Mexico. But many of them will soon migrate south for the winter, many right to areas in the path of the spreading oil. Northeast biologists are trying to get a head start on tracking their progress. They're especially concerned about protected birds like the oyster catcher. Maine Public Radio's Susan Sharon reports.
(Sep 19, 2008) A deal for the Follensby Pond acquisition has been sought by environmental groups, paddlers and hikers for a long time. Martha Foley talked with Phil Brown, editor of the Adirondack Explorer magazine, about the significance of the purchase, and local reaction. He said local concerns focus on property tax revenue (which could increase) and public access.
(Aug 7, 2008) The North Country lost one of its most influential voices for history and preservation this summer. Paul Malo, architect, author and advocate for all things historic and special in the Thousand Islands and the Adirondacks passed away last month in Granby, New York. He was 78. For many years, Malo discovered and documented some of the hidden treasures in the region, from Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island to Sagamore, an Adirondack great camp. Todd Moe has this remembrance.
