Fiscal cliff deal brings good news for wind industry

(Jan 3, 2013) As part of its "fiscal cliff" deal, the U.S. Congress agreed earlier this week in Washington, D.C., to extend production tax credits for wind energy producers until the end of 2013.In 2012, wind projects could only qualify for the production tax credit if they'd finished construction and started producing energy. But this year, projects will be eligible for the tax break simply by starting construction. They don't have to be finished by the end of the year.
Municipal power advocates try to seal the deal in Albany

(Apr 20, 2010) A bill that would allow two dozen towns in St. Lawrence and Franklin counties to form a municipal power company is getting closer to passage. And local leaders are taking a bus to Albany today to try to push it over the finish line. The bill to create the North Country Power Authority is the product of a decade of work by the Alliance for Municipal Power. The bill has already passed the Senate. After clearing a key committee in the Assembly yesterday, it’s now one committee away from a floor vote. Supporters believe it will pass. David Sommerstein reports.
Commentary: Wind Power A Necessary Evil & Symbol of Hope

(Mar 7, 2005) If wind power projects go forward in the North Country, they will change the visual landscape for some of the most pristine areas in the Adirondack Park. Author and activist Bill McKibben spends much of each year wandering the hills and back roads near his home in Johnsburg. McKibben says the massive windmills are a necessary evil and a symbol of hope for a world threatened by global warming. Bill McKibben is author of the End of Nature and a new book due out this spring called Wandering Home about his his trek through the Champlain Valley. He divides his time between Johnsburg, in the Adirondacks, and Middlebury, Vermont. His essay first appeared in the New York Times.
(Dec 28, 2004) Plans to build a biodiesel plant in St. Lawrence County are taking longer than expected. Canton College officials want to double the capacity of the factory.
(Aug 4, 2003) Lewis County lawmakers decided last week on a taxation agreement with Flat Rock Wind Power, moving construction of a wind farm one step closer.
(Nov 23, 2001) President Bush is again promoting what many environmentalists view as an outdated energy plan, with an insufficient focus on renewable energy. Some may be surprised by who's leading protest against the plan. Many religious leaders are voicing concern about America's dependence on fossil fuels.
(Apr 23, 2001) On Saturday in Canton, hundreds of people took a crash course in energy issues of a different kind. As a part of Earth Day weekend, the North Country Sustainable Energy Fair exhibited an array of energy alternatives... production without new power plants or oil wells, and consumption without higher bills. David Sommerstein was there and takes us on a sustainable energy tour.
