Cuomo offers McDonald endorsement

(Sep 27, 2012) Governor Cuomo has crossed party lines and offered a political endorsement to Republican Senator Roy McDonald, who lost a primary this month after voting to support same-sex marriage. In a letter released by his staff, Cuomo tells state Sen. McDonald that it's "evident" McDonald "paid a price" for his convictions when the senator agreed to be one of four Republican votes needed to pass New York's same-sex marriage bill. The governor laments what he says is the "disproportionate power of the political extremists," and writes to McDonald "you should not be left to stand alone now." [full story]

(Mar 16, 2012) Seven casinos, a cut in one of the biggest government costs facing taxpayers, more convictions of career criminals and a far more promising outlook for Republicans are results of the wheeling and dealing that ended early yesterday morning in Albany. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is declaring victory. His Republican allies in the Senate, who faced oblivion just two years ago, scored major wins to give the party a powerful, longer life in the increasingly blue state. The all-night session of the legislature left bitter feelings between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, after Democrats stormed out in protest over the middle of the night redistricting vote. Martha Foley has more. [full story]

(Feb 9, 2012) Kellie Greene has tossed her hat into the mix of candidates seeking to defeat U.S. Rep. Bill Owens in the upcoming congressional election. The Sackets Harbor woman describes herself as a “true” constitutional conservative. She says she’s been sitting on the sidelines long enough and is ready to make a go of it.Greene formally announced her candidacy during an event in Watertown last week. She’s challenging businessman Matt Doheny, a former Wall Street financier, for the Republican and Conservative party lines. A primary has been set for June 26. Chris Morris has more on the candidate.
(Aug 9, 2011) There was a bit of a love fest last month in Potsdam, as State Senator Betty Little, a Republican from Queensbury, introduced Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Democrat. Good things are happening in Albany, the senator indicated, because of the Cuomo's leadership over the first six months of his term.As Albany reporter Karen DeWitt reports, the Democratic governor and Senate Republicans have a mutual interest in keeping their alliance strong.
(Jun 3, 2010) Republican conventioneers will end their nominating convention in Manhattan today by considering who'll run against incumbent democratic U.S. Sena. Kirsten Gillibrand. There are three contenders, and a primary is likely. It'll be just the latest disagreement in a series of disoutes at the convention.
Feud among national conservatives could hurt Scozzafava candidacy

(Oct 5, 2009) In just four weeks, voters will go to the polls to replace former North Country Congressman John McHugh, who was appointed Secretary of the Army. The candidates are out on the campaign trail talking about jobs and taxes and healthcare. But one of the biggest factors shaping the race for New York’s 23d district is a bitter ideological feud within the national conservative movement. Many activist groups in Washington DC think Republican Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava is too liberal. They’re backing Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. As Brian Mann reports, the fierce infighting on the right could throw the election to Democrat Bill Owens.
(Feb 19, 2008) A new poll from the Siena College Research Institute shows Hillary Rodham Clinton still leading Republican John McCain in a prospective presidential vote 49% to 42%. It also shows her Democratic rival Barack Obama leading McCain among New York voters, and by a similar margin, 47% to 40%. Brian Mann has been tracking rural voters as this election year unfolds. He talked with Martha Foley about the influence rural Americans may have on the primaries, and the outcome in November.
(Jun 2, 2006) Editorial cartoonist Mark Wilson was at the GOP convention yesterday too – his sketches from the Democratic and Republican convention are at NCPR's special convention page. In Buffalo for the Democratic gathering earlier this week, Wilson described the mood there as uncharacteristically confident – for Democrats. And unified. This morning, he told Martha Foley the GOP convention on Long Island also showed a reversal of the party’s usual style.
