(Jan 10, 2013) Gov. Cuomo laid out a challenging year for New York in his State of the State speech Wednesday. The bullet points are many and varied, from raising the minimum wage, to money for the "clean economy," a 10-point Women's Equality Act, "destination resort casinos", a regional tourism competition, an Adirondack whitewater competition, a tough assault weapons ban, incentives for teachers and for schools to provide more time in the classroom. Then there was emergency preparedness, worker's comp, fairness in the justice system, housing, climate change.
(Jan 7, 2010) Most of the reforms and initiatives Gov. David Paterson outlined yesterday require legislative approval. Early reaction to his package of ethics reforms, including campaign finance reform and term limits, has been cool. But there were signs of comity yesterday. Martha Foley has reaction from the region.
Gillibrand holds dairy crisis hearing

(Aug 28, 2009) On dairy farms across the North Country, this summer may become known as the crisis of 2009. Milk prices are lower than they’ve been in 40 years. Most farmers here are trying to hang on, but every day they’re going deeper into debt. Yesterday in the western New York town of Batavia, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand held a federal hearing to find a long-term solution to the boom-and-bust cycle in the milk price. Farmers, processors, and economists testified. Bryan Gotham of St. Lawrence County believes a long-term fix may not be enough to help farmers now. Gotham milks 600 cows on a family farm in the town of Russell. He attended the hearing and told David Sommerstein more than 300 people were there, many of them farmers who left the fields during the busy late summer season to send a message.
(Feb 17, 2009) A St. Lawrence County farmer kicks off a project to teach new gardeners the basics of growing food this week. Rich Douglass, of Hermon, says his "Food for Life" project is for people who want to produce their own food but don't know where to begin. He'll talk about his free project during a presentation tonight at 7 pm at St. Lawrence University. Douglass told Todd Moe that he and his family grow 80% of their own food.
A kick, and lots of bucks, at donkey b-ball

(Mar 11, 2008) Forget about all those bake sales and bottle drives. A hallowed tradition of North Country school fundraisers is donkey basketball. A private company trucks a team of donkeys clad with rubber hoofs to the school gym for hoops, kicks, and lots of bucks. A curious David Sommerstein went to a recent game in St. Lawrence County and sent this story.
(Nov 30, 2007) Two young men, Graham Garland from Potsdam and Colton resident Michael Fulton, will share the leading role in St. Lawrence University’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s one-act Christmas opera Amahl and the Night Visitors. Performances are tonight and again Saturday night (8 pm) at the Russell Opera House and on Sunday, December 16th (2 pm) in Gulick Theatre at St. Lawrence University. Amahl and the Night Visitors was first presented live on television back in 1951. It’s the story of a poor, disabled boy and his mother who are visited by three kings while on their journey to visit the Christ child. Todd Moe spoke with the director and music director of the St. Lawrence University production. Gerard Moses is emeritus professor of drama at Syracuse University, and talked about producing and directing the show at two venues – a modern stage on campus and the historic Russell Opera House.
