(May 3, 2012) Mendelssohn's greatest work, Elijah, will be performed this Sunday afternoon (3 pm) at Trinity Episcopal Church in Watertown. Todd Moe talks with conductor Richard Probert about the popular piece, which will include more than 60 singers, soloists, an orchestra and organ. The concert is a collaboration between the Sackets Harbor Vocal Arts Ensemble, the Trinity choir and an orchestra of 47 musicians from the North Country, New York City and Montreal. It's part of the annual Trinity Concert Series. Maestro Probert says Elijah is second only to Handel's Messiah in terms of how often it's performed.

(Mar 16, 2012) Historical re-enactors will gather in Sackets Harbor this weekend as part of a War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration. But the conversations will focus on period clothing and quilts, rather than muskets and cannons. Todd Moe talks with Ted Schofield, a re-enactor from Chaumont, about his early 19th century reproduction sewing implements and a love of recreating historic clothing.
Zebra mussels rebounding near Sackets Harbor

(Aug 16, 2010) A thick cake of zebra mussels nearly shut down a water treatment plant in Sackets Harbor last week. The invasive species has been wreaking havoc in Lake Ontario for more than 20 years now. New regulations on the ocean-going freighters that first brought zebra mussels to these shores—and other measures—have led some to believe the invader has been contained. But, as Jonathan Brown reports, officials in Sackets Harbor now fear the species is rebounding.
Old-time baseball in historic Kingston

(May 15, 2009) War of Independence and war of 1812 aside, there's always been more to bring residents on either side of the St. Lawrence River together than to keep them apart. Canadians and Americans have used the waterways for trade, prohibition-era rum-running, and family visits for more than 300 years. In mid to late 1800s, even before the first hockey games, bands of men were boating across the water, and the border, to play baseball in Sackets Harbor and Ogdensburg and Watertown and Kingston, Ontario. Today, baseball enthusiasts relive the old-time games with old-fashioned rules, snappy nicknames, and dapper uniforms. David Sommerstein went to a game in Kingston a couple weeks ago for our story.
Outdoor furnaces taking the heat

(Jun 10, 2008) Winter seems a long way off. But with the price of home heating oil and natural gas expected to continue to soar, North Country residents are already scrambling for cheaper ways to stay warm. Outdoor wood furnaces are an increasingly popular alternative because they can burn most any kind of wood. But tonight in Jefferson County, the village of Sackets Harbor may join a growing number of communities to restrict or ban them. As David Sommerstein reports, the smoke from outdoor furnaces can bother neighbors and pose a risk to human health and the environment.
