(Nov 28, 2012) SUNY Potsdam President John Schwaller made a surprise announcement Tuesday that he's stepping down from his post, effective July 31. Schwaller didn't detail his reasons for resigning. In a letter to campus, he said simply "the time is right for new leadership." Schwaller's unexpected announcement comes during a period of change at the SUNY campuses in neighboring Potsdam and Canton, one touched off last year with a controversial plan to consolidate presidencies at the two schools, with Schwaller presumably at the top.SUNY leadership in Albany stepped back from the shared presidency after protests from the Canton College community. Now, Schwaller's announcement is renewing concerns about consolidation.
SUNY Potsdam welcomes new president

(Aug 25, 2006) It's a busy week at many of the colleges and universities in the region. Classes start next week. SUNY Potsdam students will welcome a new president when they return to class. Last spring, The State University of New York Board of Trustees named Dr. John Schwaller as SUNY-Potsdam’s new president. A scholar of early colonial Latin America, and of the Aztec language and people, Schwaller is the author of five books and the editor of two others. His wife, Anne, was born in New York City, and lived in Watertown while in elementary school. He told Todd Moe that he views managing a school in rural New York not as a challenge, but as an opportunity.
