A new love of learning, at 83

(Nov 27, 2012) A Canton great-grandmother will earn her associate degree from SUNY Canton in a few weeks, and says she wants to continue her higher education. 83-year-old Myrtle Butterfield is a liberal arts major who says age should never be a barrier to attending college.Butterfield went straight from high school to marriage in the late 1940's and says she regretted not getting a college degree. This year, she's been taking classes alongside two of her great grandchildren, 65 years after graduating from high school.
Deepening budget woes force local governments into "moral" dilemmas

(Aug 14, 2012) Half a decade after the Great Recession began, many local governments around the US and here in the North Country are still hurting. Core services and programs are being scaled back, cut or privatized. Last month alone, another 9,000 public sector workers were laid off nationwide. While the private sector economy is creaking back to life, government experts say they sources of revenue that fund local programs haven't revived. As Brian Mann reports, that's sparked a new debate over what government should look like—not at the Federal level, but at the grassroots.

(Jun 8, 2012) This week, Adirondack Health unveiled a sweeping plan to revamp medical care in Lake Placid, closing the village’s old hospital, expanding its facilities at the Uihlein campus and eliminating as many as 60 nursing home beds. Some local leaders say the changes took them by surprise, but they also expressed broad comfort with the plan, which could eventually include expanded services and new assisted living apartments. Brian Mann has details.
(Oct 27, 2011) Ground was broken last month on a new elder care facility in the town of Watertown – the Samaritan Senior Village project. The facility will include both nursing home and assisted living beds for up to 288 residents. Community members say the project was badly needed to fill a gap, especially in assisted living space, for older residents. Joanna Richards has the story.
Essex County struggles to find buyers for costly nursing home

(Aug 25, 2010) Essex County has been exploring the possibility of selling the Horace Nye nursing home in Elizabethtown. But county manager Dan Palmer says it appears that no one is interested in buying the facility. Essex County faces a seven million dollar budget deficit next year. Nearly a third of that has been blamed on the expense of running the nursing home. Todd Moe has more.
New music later in life

(Aug 24, 2010) Senior adults who would like to learn to play a concert band instrument are invited to a workshop in Potsdam tomorrow morning. Dig out that old clarinet or trumpet from the attic, or try out a new instrument. Brass player Ron Berry came up with the idea of starting a band for seniors based on his experiences, as an adult, at summer music camps through the New Horizons International Music Association. He told Todd Moe that beginners are especially welcome.
(Jun 23, 2010) Essex County says it will begin looking for private companies willing to buy the county-owned Horace Nye Nursing Home. The Horace Nye Task Force, made up of members of the county board of supervisors, gave Essex County Manager Dan Palmer the go-ahead this week. A report issued this week by county officials found that the Horace Nye home, with 100 beds, is losing more than $2 million a year. Todd Moe has more.
(Mar 4, 2010) About 60 people braced the chilly winds coming off the St. Lawrence River yesterday to urge River Hospital not to close its nursing home and adult day care unit. The hospital says it can’t sustain the home’s financial losses. But the demonstrators believe the community can raise the money needed to keep open the place their elders call home. David Sommerstein reports.
(Sep 29, 2009) Nearly everyone in St. Lawrence County knows Ruth Garner, the former mayor of Potsdam. Turning 94 this year, she is still active in local politics. But few people are familiar with Ruth's experiences growing up through the Great Depression— and how her travels as a young girl shaped her political career. This story was produced for NCPR by Brenna Rice for the Common Wealth, Common Wisdom Project.
Common Wealth, Common Wisdom, pt.3: looking the Great Depression in the mirror

(Sep 14, 2009) Each Monday this month, we’re featuring new features from our Common Wealth, Common Wisdom project. North Country teens paired with senior citizens to explore the concept of entrepreneurship during the Great Depression, and today’s Great Recession. When Chelsea Ross went across the street to interview her 90-year-old neighbor, Bill Cullen, she expected to hear some stories about working hard as a kid in the Great Depression era. She expected to get a 'how to' guide for surviving today's recession. What she got instead was different. What she got was a weird mirror on her life from 70 years before.
