(Jun 22, 2012) The rape trial of former Saranac Lake youth center director Michael Scaringe turned up allegations of sex abuse dating back to his teaching days in Tupper Lake in the 1970s. Franklin County’s district attorney now says school officials knew of the allegations and apparently didn't report them to police. Chris Knight reports.
(Jan 23, 2012) A mistrial was declared Friday in a high profile rape case in Franklin County. Michael Scaringe was arrested in January 2010 on charges of raping a then 13-year-old girl while he was director of the Saranac Lake Youth Center. As Chris Knight reports, the mistrial was declared after Scaringe dismissed one of his defense attorneys.

(Apr 26, 2010) A federal judge has ordered a new trial for a Saranac Lake pediatrician who was found guilty of negligence in an $11 million malpractice case. U.S. Northern District Court Judge Lawrence Kahn granted a motion for a retrial from lawyers for Dr. Patricia Monroe and Adirondack Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, a Saranac Lake medical practice. Last summer, a jury found Monroe failed to take steps to prevent two young girls from being repeatedly sexually assaulted by their older half-brother. Chris Knight reports.
(Feb 17, 2006) A public inquiry into an alleged pedophile sex ring in Cornwall, Ontario is grabbing headlines in Canada. The Ontario government this week began a sort of “truth and reconciliation” process. As David Sommerstein reports, it’s designed to lift the sordid cloud that’s plagued Cornwall for years and promote community healing.
8 Priests Avoid Prosecution For Alleged Sex Assaults

(Jan 8, 2004) None of the eight Roman Catholic priests removed from office over the last two years will face criminal prosecution. Officials with the Diocese of Ogdensburg say the statute of limitations for child sex crimes makes it impossible to punish offenders. As Brian Mann reports, St. Lawrence county's district attorney says he wants church officials to provide more information about the cases.
In Canada, A Church Sex Abuse Scandal Touches Thousands of Natives and Lawsuits Threaten Religious Groups With Bankruptcy

(Jun 6, 2002) While the Roman Catholic church in the United States wrestles with its sex-abuse scandal, churches in Canada face a crisis of their own. For more than a century, Canada's government forced native children into boarding schools - schools run by the country's leading churches. Now, thousands of former students claim they were raped and beaten, by priests and other school officials. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent, to settle victim claims and to rebuild native communities. But as North Country Public Radio's Brian Mann reports, the crush of lawsuits is forcing Canadian religious groups into bankruptcy.
