Controversial APA rule change would affect hundreds of shoreline homes

(Nov 14, 2008) The Adirondack Park Agency is poised to enact sweeping new regulations today. The rules would expand APA authority to restrict shoreline development inside a 50-foot buffer zone. Supporters in the environmental community say the changes close loopholes that endanger water quality and waterfront habitat. But critics describe the move as an illegal power grab that threatens local economies. Brian Mann reports.
On Great Sacandaga Lake, A Feud Over Beach Rights

(Jul 12, 2005) The Hudson River Black River Regulating District faces new criticism over management of the state-owned shoreline at Great Sacandaga Lake. More than 120 miles of public beach is leased each year by the authority to thousands of property owners. Most of the permit-holders own land adjacent to the reservoir. But roughly 1800 so-called “back lot” permits are held by people who own homes within a mile of the shore. State officials now say some of those permits won’t be allowed to transfer when properties are sold to new owners. Instead, the permits will be turned over to "front lot" homeowners who live next to the lake. As Brian Mann reports, critics say the policy is unfair and could cost them tens of thousands of dollars.
Lake George's Clean Water at Risk

(May 2, 2003) Many people who live on Lake George still draw their drinking water directly from the shore. It’s considered one of the cleanest big lakes in the country. But a new coalition of groups that met this week says accelerating development threatens that quality. As Brian Mann reports, storm-water erosion, sewage, and even road salt are changing the lake’s chemistry.
(Apr 29, 2003) Officials in Lake George plan to vote in two weeks on a rule that would ban jetskis and other personal watercraft. But a new group is organizing to block the change. As Brian Mann reports it’s part of a movement in the region to support motorized access to lakes and state land.
(Feb 4, 2003) A 4-year study on the health of the Great Lakes is halfway finished. So far, the biggest threat is private and commercial development along the region's shorelines. The Great Lakes Radio Consortium's Mike Simonson has more.
(Dec 9, 2002) On Friday, Governor George Pataki appointed an interim chairman to head the Adirondack Park Agency. Jim Frenette has been a member of the commission since 1992.
(Oct 10, 2002) The Adirondack Park Agency meets today, to consider fast-track approval for a major new hotel on Lake George. The developer says a quick answer is necessary to save the project. But a pro-environment group claims that the Park Agency is showing favoritism to a former commissioner. Brian Mann has details.
