(Feb 13, 2012) The U.S. government supports renewable energy with money for research and tax breaks. But as the Innovation Trail’s Matt Richmond reports, that backing has come under political fire, and the industry is already feeling the effects.
Subsidies for solar power

(May 21, 2010) Sources of renewable energy like wind, solar, and hydroelectric are still just tiny players in a world powered by fossil fuels. Most of the power for your light switch comes from burning coal and natural gas. Mark Brush reports the government is trying to change that. There are state and federal programs that will pay you to put solar panels on your house.
(May 27, 2009) President Barack Obama's visit to Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas today has more to do with what's on the ground than it does the fighter jets in the air. Lester Graham reports on the base's solar energy project.
The beauty of scrounging

(Apr 22, 2009) Jim Juczak and his family are proud of their Jefferson County home. And they don’t mind if people say it’s trashy. Most of it is made of junk. Juczak lives near Adams Center and runs Woodhenge, an off-grid community and sustainability school. He’s one of the featured speakers at the Sustainable Energy Fair in Canton this weekend. Juczak is a lecturer, tinkerer, gardener, alternative energy do-it-yourself expert, and green builder. He spoke with Todd Moe about his 18-sided home made of wood and papercrete – a paper sludge from a local mill. He says 80 % of his home is made of salvaged materials.
(Jul 1, 2008) An Essex County man wants to build solar panel manufacturing facilities in business parks in Malone and Harrietstown, potentially creating 100 new jobs in Franklin County. Brian McManus, an entrepreneur, business consultant and former Wall Street trader, is also planning an educational facility that would train workers in alternative energy technology. In addition to the job benefits, McManus says the projects will help to reduce the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels. Chris Knight reports.
(Oct 29, 2002) Niagara Mohawk customers can now choose to buy renewable energy on their latest electric bills. But they’ll have to pay more for it, about 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour more. To better understand how this new system works, David Sommerstein spoke with Ann Heidenreich, director of Community Energy Services and the North Country’s state representative for energy efficiency.
